Job Description The Role As a General Motors Economics Summer Intern, you will support strategic decision-making by analyzing the global macroeconomy , United States and international automotive markets, and key public policy developments. You will apply your economics training and coding skills to support economic modeling, develop digital tools for internal business partners, and prepare written analysis that translates complex data into clear insights for decision-makers. This is a hands-on, learning-focused opportunity for a graduate student seeking to deepen their understanding of applied macroeconomics and gain experience on an in-house economics team. The Team The General Motors Economics team is part of Global Planning and Customer Research. The team supports senior leaders across the company through data-driven analysis of the global economy and automotive industry.The team conducts applied economic research, develops industry forecasts, and analyzes public policy topics to inform General Motors’ business strategy, public policy engagement, and external communications. This internship offers the opportunity to learn applied economics in a real-world setting while working with the Chief Economist and other members of the economics team. What You’ll Do During the internship, you will: Support analysis of topics such as global and United States economic growth, inflation, labor markets, and household balance sheets. Analyze the outlook for the North American and global automotive industries. Evaluate the potential effects of public policy changes on General Motors, the automotive industry, and customers. Draft concise briefing materials that communicate key economic insights to nontechnical audiences across business units. Help build digital tools that automate the distribution of analysis on key economic indicators and automotive industry metrics. Learning Outcomes By the end of the internship, you will: Gain practical experience applying macroeconomic theory and econometrics to real-world questions facing a global automaker. Deepen your understanding of how economic conditions and public policies shape the automotive industry and manufacturing in the United States and abroad. Strengthen your coding skills in R, Python, Stata, or similar tools, including documentation and reproducible analysis practices in a business setting. Develop experience responsibly applying artificial intelligence tools in a corporate economics environment. Learn to translate technical analysis into clear, actionable insights for senior leaders and non-economist audiences. Build experience working in a cross-functional corporate environment. Required Qualifications Available to work full-time, 40 hours per week, during the 12 week Summer 2027 internship. Currently pursuing a Masters or PhD degree in economics or a closely related field, with rigorous training in macroeconomics and econometrics. Master student must be graduating between December 2027 - June 2029. PhD student must be graduating between December 2027 -2033. Experience using at least one of the following programming languages or tools for data analysis: R, Python, or Stata. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with an ability to communicate clearly and tailor messages to different audiences. Interest in the automotive industry, manufacturing, or industrial policy. Commitment to learning, openness to feedback, and a collaborative, low-ego approach to teamwork. Preferred Qualifications Experience using EViews, MATLAB, or similar economic and statistical tools. Familiarity with economic forecasting, applied macroeconomics, econometrics, or automotive industry analysis. Experience developing data visualizations, automated reporting, or digital tools for business users. Interest in the responsible use of artificial intelligence tools in a corporate economics setting. Ability to translate technical analysis into clear, actionable insights for senior leaders and nontechnical audiences. Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as finance, vehicle forecasting, public policy, or international markets. Start Date Start dates for our 12 week, Summer 2027 internships are May 24th and June 14th of 2027 Work Arrangement Hybrid: This role follows a hybrid work arrangement. The successful candidate is expected to report in person at least three days per week to either the Warren Technical Center in Warren, Michigan, or the General Motors Public Policy Office in Washington, D.C. GM will provide a one-time lump sum taxable stipend payment to eligible students selected for the 2027 Student Program - to help facilitate administration of relocation benefits, please apply using the permanent address you would move from .
