Backend Developer (Node.js)

Role Description This is a full-time remote role for a Backend Developer (Node.js). The Backend Developer will design, develop, and maintain scalable APIs and microservices that power NUGTTAH’s customer retention and loyalty platform. Responsibilities include implementing business logic in Node.js, integrating with databases and third-party services, ensuring performance, security, and reliability, and writing clean, testable code. The role involves collaborating closely with front-end developers, product managers, and QA to deliver new features, optimize existing components, and resolve production issues. The Backend Developer will also contribute to code reviews, documentation, and continuous improvement of backend architecture and development practices.

Qualifications

Required

• At least 2 years of professional experience building backend services in Node.js, on a production system with real users. Course projects, bootcamp work, and personal side projects do not substitute for this.
• Real hands-on MongoDB experience: schema design, aggregation pipelines, indexing, and the ability to explain why a query got slow and what you did about it. We work in MongoDB daily, so this is a hard requirement, not a nice-to-have.
• Comfortable writing TypeScript, or clearly able to get there fast.
• REST API design and integration: authentication, error handling, versioning, and writing endpoints that other teams have to consume without asking you how they work.
• Solid software development fundamentals: Git and code review, debugging a live system, testing, and shipping your own work to production.
• Enough OOP and design sense to write modular code that the next person can extend instead of rewrite.
• Awareness of security and performance basics for web applications, and the habit of thinking about both before someone else has to point them out.
• Able to operate independently in a remote setup: take an ambiguous ticket, ask the right questions, and close it without being chased.
• Clear written English. Most of our coordination happens in writing, asynchronously, across time zones, so writing clearly is part of the job and not a soft skill.

How we actually evaluate candidates

We weight how you think above what your CV says, and our process is built around that. What we look for:

• Do you ask the right questions before writing code, or do you build the wrong thing correctly?
• When something breaks in production, can you reason from evidence to a cause, instead of guessing and redeploying?
• Can you read unfamiliar code in a codebase you did not write, and understand it quickly?
• Do you catch the edge case nobody wrote in the ticket?
• When you got a design wrong, did you notice it yourself, and what did you do next?

There is no degree requirement. We have hired strong people with unremarkable CVs and passed on impressive ones. If you are self-taught and you can do the work, apply.

• Cloud platform experience and containerization
• Database performance work on a system with meaningful data volume
• Event-driven or asynchronous systems (queues, streaming, background jobs)
• Integrating external services and third-party APIs, where you do not control the other side of the contract
