Job Title: BESS Principal Engineer Job Description The BESS Principal Engineer plans, designs, and executes large-scale energy storage projects, providing engineering leadership and consulting across cross-functional teams to deliver best-in-class battery energy storage solutions. This role combines deep technical expertise with strong project management capabilities and requires hands-on experience in the energy storage field, from initial concept and scope definition through project completion. Responsibilities Support the design phase and engineer major components for large-scale battery energy storage projects. Review engineering drawings, recognize inconsistencies, take corrective action, and drive continuous improvement in design quality and efficiency. Identify and resolve errors in engineering studies and propose robust solutions to prevent recurrence. Prepare detailed technical scopes of work to support contracts and vendor engagements. Support projects from inception to completion by working closely with project managers and cross-functional stakeholders. Influence project teams on key engineering decisions and guide technical direction across disciplines. Monitor project progress and technical issues to ensure alignment with schedule, budget, and performance targets. Manage project milestones, proactively identify risks, and recommend mitigation strategies. Collaborate with suppliers to integrate major equipment into overall system designs. Work with diverse internal and external teams to solve complex problems, enhance project opportunities, and integrate systems and controls effectively. Interpret and apply specifications for major equipment purchasing, ensure clear technical communication, and recommend solutions when issues arise. Understand permitting requirements for energy storage projects, propose solutions to regulatory and legal challenges, and recommend site design improvements. Perform additional engineering and project-related duties as assigned to support successful delivery. Travel up to 25% of the time to project sites and corporate offices for project-specific duties, with additional travel for remote team members as needed. Essential Skills Minimum of 3 years of experience in Solar/PV engineering and/or construction, with exposure to utility-scale or large commercial projects. Demonstrated expertise in one or more of the following areas: power electronics, battery storage system design, substation design, or generation tie design. Strong understanding of energy storage technologies, including battery chemistries, power conversion units, and DC/DC converters. Familiarity with lithium-ion battery storage safety standards such as UL1973, UL9540, NFPA 855, NFPA 70E, NEC, and applicable IFC/IBC sections. Ability to independently manage specialized technical tasks and make sound engineering judgments. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey complex technical concepts to diverse audiences. Proven ability to work effectively with project managers and cross-functional teams throughout the full project lifecycle. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working on large-scale battery energy storage systems (BESS) and related grid-connected infrastructure. Familiarity with relevant IEC standards applicable to energy storage and electrical systems. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to propose innovative technical and design solutions. Comfort working in a fast-paced corporate environment with multiple concurrent projects. Willingness to travel for site visits, supplier meetings, and in-office collaboration, with flexibility for increased travel when working remotely. Ability to build productive relationships with suppliers, contractors, and internal stakeholders. Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage milestones, track risks, and maintain project documentation. Work Environment This role operates in a corporate environment focused on large-scale energy storage and solar/PV projects, with collaboration across engineering, project management, and supplier teams. The primary location is Juno Beach, with a preference for on-site work and openness to remote arrangements for highly qualified candidates who are willing to travel more frequently for in-office visits and project needs. Work involves a mix of office-based design and analysis, virtual collaboration with cross-functional teams, and periodic travel to project sites and supplier facilities. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Juno Beach, FL. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $65.00 - $70.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
