Chief Operating Officer – Locum Tenens Division

Location: Remote – United States

Employment Type: Full-Time

Compensation: $200,000–$260,000 base salary plus executive performance compensation

Target Total Compensation: $1,000,000–$1,460,000+

Long-Term Incentive: Profit-sharing or equity participation may be considered based on experience and final structure.

The Opportunity

PX3 Medical is seeking a Chief Operating Officer to build, lead and scale our locum tenens business.

This is not a corporate maintenance role and it is not a purely internal operations position. The COO will be responsible for building a commercially successful locums division, personally participating in early revenue generation and establishing the team, processes and controls required for profitable growth.

The successful candidate must understand the entire locums lifecycle: client development, provider recruitment, pricing, confirmation, credentialing, compliance, scheduling, travel, provider support, invoicing and margin management.

Initially, the COO will personally develop strategic accounts and help fill priority assignments. Over time, direct production should transition to the team as the COO assumes broader responsibility for division leadership, strategy, profitability and scale.

What You Will Own

  • Overall growth, performance and profitability of the locum tenens division.
  • Strategic client development and selected placements during the build stage.
  • Recruitment and leadership of account managers, recruiters and operational personnel.
  • Division economics, including pricing, pay rates, bill rates, gross margin and contribution profit.
  • Operational systems supporting credentialing, compliance, scheduling, travel and provider management.
  • Production standards, reporting, forecasting and performance accountability.
  • Provider starts, active assignments, extensions and retention.
  • Identification of attractive specialties, markets and service opportunities.
  • Development of strategic accounts and expansion across multiple facilities or service lines.
  • Division-level hiring plans, compensation design and resource allocation.
  • Risk management, service quality and operational discipline.
  • Integration of the locums division with PX3 Medical’s permanent placement and executive-search capabilities.
  • A multi-year growth strategy supported by measurable milestones and sound unit economics.

What We Are Looking For

  • Extensive experience leading a locum tenens or physician staffing business.
  • Documented success in personal production, client development and staffing leadership.
  • Experience building, launching, turning around or materially scaling a locums division.
  • Strong command of staffing economics, pricing, margin and operating leverage.
  • Working knowledge of provider credentialing, compliance and assignment operations.
  • Experience recruiting and developing both commercial and operational teams.
  • Demonstrated ownership of revenue, gross profit, forecasting and profitability.
  • Strong client credibility and executive-level communication skills.
  • Ability to move rapidly between strategic decisions and hands-on execution.
  • Comfort building infrastructure without recreating the bureaucracy of a large staffing company.
  • Willingness to accept meaningful accountability in exchange for meaningful authority and upside.

How Success Will Be Measured

Success will include profitable gross-profit growth, provider starts, active assignments, client acquisition, account expansion, team production, provider retention, forecast accuracy and the development of a scalable operating platform.

Why PX3 Medical

PX3 Medical works with healthcare organizations facing some of the country’s most difficult workforce challenges, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

The COO will have the opportunity to build the locums division with direct access to the CEO, considerable influence over strategy and meaningful participation in the value created.

This is an opportunity for an experienced locums executive who believes they can build a better operation and wants the authority, accountability and compensation structure to prove it.

About PX3 Medical:

At PX3 Medical, excellence isn't just a goal, it's our standard. Our name reflects our ethos: People placing people. We are driven by a robust set of core values: integrity, professionalism, fun and friendliness, grit, commitment, transparency, and excellence. These principles guide our team as we meticulously match Physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), and Executives with opportunities. Each placement is carefully aligned not only with the candidate’s skills and career aspirations but also with the needs of our clients and the communities they serve.
