Civil Engineer

Job Title: Civil Engineer – Water Resources Job Description This Civil Engineer role focuses on the planning, design, and delivery of water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, storage facilities, and distribution and collection systems. You will lead technical design efforts, ensure regulatory compliance with local, state, and federal standards, support permitting activities, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to deliver optimized, cost-effective, and sustainable water resources solutions. The position offers a hybrid work model and the opportunity to mentor junior engineers while contributing to the growth of a dynamic water resources practice. Responsibilities Plan and design water and wastewater treatment facilities, pumping stations, storage facilities, and distribution and collection systems in accordance with ASCE, NSF/ANSI standards, and applicable regulations, including the Clean Water Act (CWA) and Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). Develop designs that thoughtfully integrate client needs, operability, and constructability to ensure practical and efficient project delivery. Perform feasibility and planning studies for water resources projects, incorporating hydraulic process and environmental evaluations and analyses in line with EPA and NJDEP guidelines. Prepare engineering calculations, engineering reports, technical specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents that comply with NJDEP regulations, NPDES permitting criteria, and other federal, state, and local requirements. Conduct site inspections and field assessments to support design and construction phases, verifying that implementation aligns with NJDEP, EPA, and local environmental standards. Lead and support regulatory permitting efforts, including NJPDES permits, Treatment Works Approvals, and coordination with the Bureau of Water System Engineering, to ensure full regulatory compliance. Coordinate and collaborate with internal multidisciplinary teams such as Structural, Civil, and MEP, as well as vendors and subcontractors, to deliver integrated, high-quality project solutions. Manage technical scope, project budgets, and schedules in a fast-paced environment, helping to expand the firm’s water resources project portfolio. Demonstrate strong understanding of maintaining and tracking fast-paced project budgets and schedules to meet client and regulatory milestones. Mentor and support junior engineering staff by sharing technical expertise, regulatory knowledge, and design procedures to strengthen the water resources practice. Incorporate energy and water efficiency measures, life cycle cost analysis, and sustainable design principles as recommended by EPA and national water resources planning guidelines into project designs. Essential Skills At least 6 years of experience in water resources engineering. Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. Civil engineering design experience focused on water and wastewater infrastructure. Proficiency with Civil 3D and AutoCAD for civil and site design. Strong knowledge of NJDEP regulations and permitting processes. Solid understanding of relevant federal standards, including EPA, CWA, and SDWA. Ability to prepare detailed engineering calculations, reports, technical specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents. Experience managing project scope, budgets, and schedules in a fast-paced environment. Capability to lead regulatory permitting efforts and coordinate with multiple agencies. Strong collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary teams, vendors, and subcontractors. Commitment to incorporating sustainable design principles, energy and water efficiency, and life cycle cost analysis into projects. EIT credential on track toward obtaining Professional Engineer (PE) licensure. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience with planning and feasibility studies for water resources projects. Background in hydraulic process and environmental evaluations and analyses. Familiarity with NJDEP regulations, NPDES criteria, and local environmental standards. Experience conducting site inspections and field assessments during design and construction phases. Ability to mentor and guide junior engineering staff. Strong written and verbal communication skills for producing clear technical documentation and coordinating with stakeholders. Demonstrated interest in sustainable water resources planning and best practices. Ability to thrive in a hybrid work setting and manage responsibilities both on site and remotely. Work Environment The role is primarily based on site with standard hours from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., complemented by a minimum of one remote workday per week as part of a hybrid work model. You will work closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams and external partners in a professional office and field environment, using design tools such as Civil 3D and AutoCAD. The work involves both desk-based design and documentation tasks as well as periodic site inspections and field assessments. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Morristown, NJ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $120000.00 - $150000.00/yr.
