About the job

Civil Engineer (Rivers) (Junior/Senior/Principal)

Remote (UK) | Full-time or part-time | competitive salary dependent on experience

At Fluvio, we're passionate about creating healthier rivers, thriving wetlands and more resilient landscapes.

As a Certified B Corporation™, we believe engineering can be a force for good. Every project we deliver is designed to create lasting environmental and social benefits, whether that's restoring natural river processes, improving fish passage, reducing flood risk or creating new wetland habitats.

We're looking for an experienced Civil Engineer to join our growing team and help shape some of the UK's most exciting river restoration and natural flood management projects. Our recent projects have included weir removals and river restoration for the National Trust, fish pass design for Severn Rivers Trust, and catchment-scale restoration design and flood modelling for Tyne Rivers Trust.

Why join Fluvio?

You'll work on genuinely meaningful projects that make a measurable difference to freshwater ecosystems while enjoying the flexibility of remote working and the opportunity to develop your career alongside experienced environmental engineers and scientists.

We offer:

  • Flexible full-time or part-time working.
  • Fully remote working with occasional UK site visits.
  • 30 days paid holiday (including bank holidays).
  • Interesting and varied projects across the UK.
  • Support towards ICE Chartership, including payment of professional membership fees.
  • Opportunities to influence project direction and company growth.
  • A collaborative, friendly, and supportive team.
  • The opportunity to work for a Certified B Corporation committed to positive environmental and social impact.

What you'll be doing

You'll play an important role in delivering projects from concept through to construction, including:

  • Designing in-river structures, river restoration, and wetland creation schemes.
  • Undertaking engineering calculations including hydraulic, structural and geotechnical assessments.
  • Preparing design drawings and technical reports.
  • Coordinating site investigations and topographical surveys.
  • Undertaking site inspections and structural assessments.
  • Preparing CDM documentation.
  • Working closely with regulators, landowners and project partners.
  • Supporting bids, proposals and client meetings.

As we continue to grow, there will be opportunities to shape your role around your interests and strengths.

About you

We're looking for someone who enjoys solving engineering problems while making a positive impact on the environment.

You'll ideally have:

Essential

  • A degree in Civil Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Experience working within a UK engineering consultancy or similar environment.
  • Experience preparing engineering designs and drawings using AutoCAD or similar software.
  • Experience designing hydraulic structures or in-river engineering.
  • Working towards Chartered Engineer status (ICE or equivalent).

Desirable

  • Chartered Engineer status (ICE or equivalent).
  • Relevant site qualifications (CSCS, First Aid, Working Near Water, SSSTS).
  • Experience in one or more of the following would be an advantage:
  • River restoration.
  • Full or partial weir removal, and/or fish passage design.
  • Wetland creation.
  • Flood modelling (rivers).
  • Flood Risk Assessments.
  • Autodesk Civil 3D.

Our culture

We're a small, ambitious consultancy where everyone has the opportunity to make a real contribution.

We're committed to delivering excellent work, supporting one another, and continuously improving. As a Certified B Corporation, we're equally committed to creating positive outcomes for our clients, communities and the environment. We donate 5% of our sales (ex VAT) as cash and in-kind service donations to environmental charities.

Diversity and inclusion

Fluvio is an equal opportunities employer. We welcome applications from suitably qualified people regardless of age, disability, gender identity, marriage or civil partnership status, pregnancy or maternity, race, religion or belief, sex or sexual orientation. Selection for employment is based solely on skills, qualifications and experience.

Applying

Please send your CV and a covering letter to [email protected]. Please include details of two case-studies of relevant civil engineering design projects (max 500 words each) that you have worked on, describing your role(s) on each of these.

Applications are reviewed as they're received and the vacancy may close early if a suitable candidate is appointed.

Fluvio will need to conduct legal Right to Work Checks to ensure that the selected candidate has the right to work in the UK.

Shortlisted candidates will be asked to provide details for two employment references. We will always seek your explicit consent before contacting them.
