Accurate clinical documentation and coding are essential to ensuring quality patient care, operational excellence, and regulatory compliance. This role offers an experienced outpatient medical coder the opportunity to make a meaningful impact across a broad range of ambulatory specialties while supporting one of the nation's leading academic health systems. As a Coding Specialist 3, you will serve as a subject matter expert in professional fee coding for, applying advanced coding knowledge to highly complex surgical, procedural, and Evaluation & Management services. This role requires a strong understanding of clinical documentation, regulatory requirements, and payer expectations, with a focus on quality, accuracy, and compliance. The Role As part of a specialized coding team, you will independently review complex outpatient documentation and apply advanced coding knowledge to support coding accuracy, quality initiatives, and regulatory compliance across multiple ambulatory specialties including Allergy, Endocrinology, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease, Internal Medicine, Nephrology, Neurology, Pulmonology, Pediatrics, and Sleep Medicine . This position is ideal for a credentialed outpatient coder with approximately three or more years of professional outpatient coding experience and a CPC certification who enjoys navigating complex documentation, solving coding challenges, and serving as a subject matter expert across multiple medical specialties. In this role, you will: Perform detailed review and assignment of CPT, ICD-10-CM, modifiers, and E/M services for physician billing. Analyze clinical documentation to accurately identify services performed and appropriately link diagnoses to procedures. Apply expertise in medical necessity, diagnosis specificity, NCCI edits, LCD/NCD guidance, and payer-specific requirements . Identify documentation inconsistencies, omissions, or deficiencies and determine when provider clarification is needed. Conduct charge review activities and support coding quality and compliance initiatives. Utilize Epic, work queues, and coding review workflows to manage coding assignments and productivity expectations. Research and apply evolving coding, reimbursement, and regulatory guidance. Collaborate with providers, clinical staff, and revenue cycle teams to promote coding excellence and compliant reimbursement practices. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS: Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Experience: 5+ years of relevant coding experience required. Cardiac, Thoracic and Vascular surgery E&M and procedure preferred. Licensure: Certified Professional Coder (CPC) required. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally requires traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs. The pay range for this role is $26.00 - $40.57 hourly. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
