The University of Maine System is seeking a Cybersecurity Analyst to join our Information Security team. This is an opportunity to play a hands-on role in protecting the systems, infrastructure, and data that support Maine's public universities. As a Cybersecurity Analyst, you will monitor and investigate security activity, respond to potential threats, support incident response and vulnerability management, and help strengthen our ability to detect and respond to emerging threats. Working alongside cybersecurity engineers, IT teams, external security partners, and campus stakeholders, you will contribute to the continuous improvement of cybersecurity operations across the University of Maine System. This is a fully remote position, open to candidates who live and are authorized to work in the United States. Standard working hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM ET, with occasional evening or weekend work as needs arise. What You'll Do In this role, you will: Monitor and analyze security alerts and events across enterprise security platforms, including security information and event management (SIEM), endpoint detection and response (EDR), email, network, identity, and cloud security tools. Triage and investigate cybersecurity alerts and suspected incidents involving phishing, compromised accounts, malware, unauthorized access, and anomalous system or network activity. Support incident response activities, including containment, evidence collection, timeline development, documentation, and coordination with affected teams. Analyze and correlate logs and security activity across systems, networks, endpoints, identity platforms, and cloud environments to identify potential threats and indicators of compromise. Support vulnerability management through scanning, validation, and analysis of findings, remediation tracking, and coordination with IT teams. Help develop, tune, test, and maintain detection rules, alert logic, and security monitoring use cases. Support identity and access management security operations, including compromised identity response and multifactor authentication-related security activities. Coordinate with managed detection and response (MDR) providers and other external cybersecurity partners on investigations, escalations, and response activities. Maintain clear and timely investigation records, incident tickets, operational documentation, and runbooks. Develop cybersecurity operations metrics and reports that identify trends and support program monitoring and improvement. Participate in incident response exercises, tabletop scenarios, post-incident reviews, and other cybersecurity improvement initiatives. Use artificial intelligence, automation, scripting, and other appropriate technologies to improve cybersecurity analysis, investigation, monitoring, reporting, documentation, and workflow efficiency. Identify opportunities to strengthen cybersecurity workflows, detection capabilities, documentation, and response processes. What We're Looking For The successful candidate will bring a strong foundation in cybersecurity operations and the ability to analyze complex security information, exercise sound judgment, and respond effectively in a collaborative environment. Required Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science, Information Systems, Information Technology, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Five years of experience in information technology, cybersecurity operations, information security, security analysis, or a related field. Demonstrated experience performing cybersecurity analysis using security monitoring, incident response, vulnerability management, endpoint security, identity security or related technologies. Knowledge of cybersecurity operations practices, including security monitoring, alert triage, incident response, threat detection, and vulnerability management. Working knowledge of networking, operating systems, identity and access management, and cloud environments as they relate to cybersecurity analysis and investigation. Ability to analyze logs, alerts, security events, and system activity to identify threats, anomalous behavior, and unauthorized activity. Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, and communication skills. Ability to communicate cybersecurity information effectively to both technical and nontechnical audiences and collaborate across teams. Preferred Qualifications A relevant cybersecurity certification, such as: CompTIA Security+ CompTIA CySA+ (Cybersecurity Analyst) Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP) Microsoft SC-200 Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) Security Essentials (GSEC) A comparable cybersecurity credential Experience supporting incident response or security operations in a complex enterprise environment. Experience with scripting, automation, or orchestration for cybersecurity. Experience working with a managed detection and response (MDR) provider, security operations center (SOC), or other external cybersecurity service provider. Experience working in higher education, the public sector, or another complex multi-site environment. Experience using artificial intelligence or emerging technologies to improve cybersecurity analysis, reporting, workflows, or operational efficiency.
