Data Engineer (Mid/Senior) - 12 Month Fixed Term (Maternity Cover)

Medichecks
Posted 1 hour ago
🇬🇧United Kingdom🏢Hybrid💰£56K–£68K📁Data & Analytics
Is this job info correct?

The Role: Data Engineer (Mid/Senior) - 12 Months Fixed Term Maternity Cover

The Team: Data

Hiring Manager: Director of Technology Operations

Hours: Full Time

Location: Hybrid* (Head office Nottingham)

Salary: £56,000 - £68,000 per annum (depending on experience)

At Medichecks, we’re on a mission to revolutionise the way people engage with their health. As a leader in remote blood testing, we empower individuals with insights that put them in control of their well-being. From working with big healthcare brands to powering over 500 clinics, pharmacies, and healthcare practitioners, we’re expanding fast—and we need exceptional people to help us grow.

If you're a data-driven problem solver with a passion for analytics, automation, and storytelling through data, this is your chance to make a real impact in a company that changes lives.

Purpose of this role

We’re looking for an experienced Data Engineer who’s comfortable working with real independence and knows the AWS data ecosystem well, to help us design, build and maintain robust data pipelines and platforms. You’ll work closely with analysts, engineers and stakeholders across the business to make sure high-quality, reliable data is available for insight and decision-making.

As part of a small, forward-thinking team, you’ll turn raw data into data people can trust. That means designing data flows, building self-service reporting in BI platforms so teams can answer their own questions, and helping ship AI features on well-shaped data. You’ll make it easy for people, and for AI, to get reliable answers across Medichecks.

This is a full-stack data engineer role, giving you the opportunity to:

  • Understand business context - Work closely with key stakeholders across different teams.
  • Conceptualise solutions - Identify opportunities for efficiency and innovation.
  • Extract and prepare data - Work with multiple sources and convert the data to a clean & structure format.
  • Build and document solutions - develop, deploy and document your work, using AI tools where they help.

Your Impact

  • Champion data quality - identify, investigate and resolve data issues and regressions, working with the Data Team to maintain data integrity.
  • Enhance efficiency - Automate data-driven tasks to streamline operational processes.
  • Empower business teams - Provide Finance, Operations, and Commercial teams with reliable data.
  • Enable self-service and AI - structure data so teams can answer their own questions in BI tools, and so AI features have clean data to build on.

This is an exciting opportunity to work in a fast-paced, innovative environment where your work directly impacts our mission to help people live longer, healthier lives.

Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years of experience as a Data Engineer or similar role, with a track record of owning solutions end to end.
  • Comfortable operating with limited steer, and acting as a senior technical voice in a small data team.
  • Strong experience with the AWS data stack:
  • S3, Lambda, RDS, DMS, EventBridge, SQS, Step Functions, CloudWatch
  • Proficient in Python and SQL (Go would be advantageous)
  • Experience with data orchestration and workflow management (e.g. Airflow or AWS- native solutions).
  • Good understanding of data modelling and data warehousing concepts.
  • Confident owning core relational databases (e.g. MySQL) and their processes.
  • Experience handling health or patient data safely (GDPR, DSPT, data security).
  • Experience with Git and version-controlled workflows.
  • Experience with stream processing (e.g. Kinesis, Kafka).
  • Familiarity with dbt for data transformation.
  • Knowledge of containerised environments (e.g. Docker, ECS, or EKS).
  • Able to structure data for self-service reporting, the modelling that lets a BI tool serve the business directly.
  • Experience with Qlik, or another BI tool such as Power BI.
  • Interest or experience in building AI features on data, such as natural-language querying, retrieval (RAG), or recommendations.
  • Comfortable using AI coding tools day to day, such as Claude.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code (e.g. Terraform) to deploy your own data pipelines. DevOps own the wider infrastructure.
  • Experience with Shopify - understanding of eCommerce
