Position Summary : The Database Administration Team Lead is responsible for managing the workload of database administrators within the infrastructure team.. They also provide guidance, technical expertise, problem resolution and mentoring to other team members. The Team Lead is accountable for the suitability, reliability, stability and availability of IT technical solutions and services in their area of responsibility. They establish and maintain security integrity controls. They formulate and monitor policies, procedures and standards relating to database management. Primary Responsibilities: Manage workloads, schedules and day-to-day operations of the administrators. Oversees resource allocation and capacity planning to ensure team alignment with project demands and timelines. Act as the first point of contact for performance-related matters, both day-to-day and within project deliverables, assessing performance and delivering timely guidance to maintain adherence to timelines and quality standards. Ensure optimal availability of technical solutions and services that support business functions. Oversee the technical and maintenance activities within the team and coordinate those activities with relevant members of the larger McGill University IT Community. Works with vendors’ technical support staff as needed. Assist in developing and delivering a strategic integration of technical solutions within the IT infrastructure team, Work with the manager / director to improve IT technologies efficiency and effectiveness. Identify risks associated with services development activities by proactively evaluating potential impact to project and propose appropriate actions to leverage or mitigate risk opportunities. Scope, plan, develop and deliver technology components under own responsibility for end-to-end services, which meet or exceed quality standards in accordance with planned budget and schedule. Work with vendors’ technical support staff as needed. Identify risks and propose mitigation strategies for technical solutions and/or services. Stay abreast of related technologies and ensure solutions meet required technical design and specifications and that deliverables adhere to best practices and standards. Develop and support standards and physical data storage design, as well as maintenance, access, and security administration. Develop database strategies that support the organization’s needs and requirements. Optimize database access and allocate/reallocate database resources for optimum configuration, database performance, and cost. Develop and establish guidelines and processes to manage demand and performance, as well as work with peers across other departments to manage demand, performance, and capacity processes. Conceptualize, design, construct, test and implement business and technical IT solutions through the application of appropriate software development life cycle methodology. Participate in business and technical IT solution implementations, upgrades, enhancements, and conversions. Provide mentoring to less experienced team members. Advise Senior IT Management (Directors) on issues as they pertain to larger organizational issues/business initiatives. When required acts as a backup or represents the Portfolio Manager Physical Storage & Data Center Operations team Requirements: Education: Undergraduate Degree Experience: Five (5) years’ related experience Skills & Expertise: Strong leadership and demonstrated effective communication, writing, planning and coordination skills Ability to facilitate and lead technical discussions Ability to recognize priorities, meet deadlines, and work under pressure. Strong understanding of incident management Capable of working in short high stress environments Self-motivated, autonomous and ability to work well with multiple teams in cross functional set-up Strong Experience with Oracle databases Strong Experience with Microsoft SQL databases Strong Experience with MySQL, Postgres and other RDBMS Thorough understanding of high availability topologies such as database clusters and standby databases Expert level experience with performance tuning , benchmarking and load profiling Expert level experience with performance optimization including SQL tuning English (spoken and written), French (spoken) Should this be added: When required acts as a backup or represents the Portfolio Manager Physical Storage & Data Center Operations team.
