Director, Data Engineering Apply Apply Director, Data Engineering At MBO we give people the control to do the work they love the way they want. We’re leading the future of work by building a best-in-class platform for independent professionals and leading enterprise organizations. MBO Partners is a deep job platform that connects and enables independent professionals and micro-business owners to do business safely and effectively with enterprise organizations. While we’ve been in business for more than 20 years, we treat each day as an opportunity to help innovate, collaborate, and shape the future of work for our enterprise and independent clients. By joining our team, you’re helping build and lead the next way of working and contributing directly to our platform roadmap and vision. Why should you apply? If you're looking for a place to expand your skills and grow your experience, this position offers an opportunity for individuals who love working with a team in a fast-paced and evolving environment, are cool under pressure, love feedback, take challenges head-on and strive for perfection in everything they do. Position Purpose: MBO Partners is looking for a Director of Data Engineering to own the design, delivery, and operation of our enterprise data platform. This is a working technical leadership role. You will spend at least half your time writing code and models, and the balance across architecture, review, troubleshooting, planning, and leading a small engineering team. You will inherit a mature platform with real users and real obligations. You will be responsible for keeping it fast, affordable, and reliable, and for constantly making it more useful to the business. The role sits within Product, alongside Product Engineering and Product Management. For an engineer or architect ready for their first formal leadership seat, it offers something uncommon: full design authority over the platform from day one, reporting directly to an SVP, without waiting to inherit it. Responsibilities: Platform and architecture Operate, extend, and modernize the AWS-hosted data warehouse and pipeline infrastructure (Postgres/Aurora, Airflow, dbt, Python). Own warehouse design across a Data Vault 2.0 raw layer and Kimball-style dimensional marts, keeping the model coherent as source systems and business questions change. Establish reusable design patterns and coding standards and hold the team to them through review practice rather than documentation alone. Share responsibility for developing and scaling test strategy, with direct ownership of test practice across pipelines, models, and reporting. Design and build net new pipelines and models personally. This is a hands-on role, not a purely supervisory one. Reporting and analytics delivery Own business-as-usual reporting, dashboards, and KPI monitoring across our BI estate (Apache Superset and Amazon QuickSight), including service levels for refresh timeliness and accuracy. Develop new operational health metrics and the alerting that accompanies them, so that problems in operational processes surface in the data before they surface with clients. Roadmap Build the data roadmap jointly with the Data Product Manager, who leads on business need and prioritization. Originate and advocate for the technical half of that roadmap. The Data Product Manager is deliberately business-facing rather than technical, so it falls to this role to surface what is newly possible: emerging tooling, novel analytical approaches, prototypes worth funding, and architectural work that will not propose itself. Make technical trade-offs legible to a non-technical audience so that sequencing decisions are made with a clear view of cost and consequence. Business partnership Work directly with data consumers across the business to understand how they operate, what decisions they are making, and what they actually need from the data. Develop deep fluency in the contingent workforce domain and in MBO's operating model. An architect who does not understand the business cannot model it. Translate business questions into durable data products rather than one-off extracts. Client-facing work is not a requirement of this role, though there is room to engage directly with clients where it is useful. Data quality and governance Champion data quality and governance by ensuring delivered products carry agreed KPI definitions, that integrations have contracts and monitoring, and that lineage and documentation are maintained and usable. Act as the technical escalation point when reported numbers are disputed. Reliability, accuracy, and cost Own uptime, pipeline performance, and data accuracy across the platform. Own the data infrastructure budget. Forecast hosting and tooling spend, track it against plan, and make deliberate cost and performance trade-offs. Team leadership Manage and develop a three-person engineering team based in India, setting priorities, reviewing work, and raising the technical bar. Standard working hours are US-based. Occasional out-of-hours involvement is expected for scheduled maintenance and break/fix escalation. The team is led remotely. There is no expectation of travel to India. Partnership within Product Partner with the head of Product Engineering on integration and interoperability with the application stack Requirements: 6+ years building and operating production data platforms. Experience guiding and mentoring engineers, setting technical direction, and owning code review. Formal people-management experience is welcome but not required. Deep, current, hands-on Python and SQL. You still write and review code every week. Production experience with dbt and Airflow (MWAA a plus). Strong relational database skills, including query tuning, indexing, and partitioning. Our warehouse runs on PostgreSQL. Practical AWS experience across the data stack, with an active eye on cost. Demonstrated dimensional modeling depth, applied in production rather than in theory. Track record of running reporting and BI as a service, with a realistic sense of what an inaccurate dashboard costs the business. Credibility with non-technical stakeholders, and a habit of learning the business rather than waiting for requirements. Desired Competencies: Data Vault 2.0 experience in a production environment. Experience in staffing, workforce solutions, HR technology, marketplaces, or another multi-party operational business. Experience managing distributed or offshore engineering teams. Hands-on experience with Apache Superset, Amazon QuickSight, or comparable BI platforms, including administration rather than authoring alone. Kubernetes/EKS familiarity. Working knowledge of data privacy obligations (GDPR, CCPA, and equivalents) and experience designing for them: retention, minimization, subject access, and cross-border transfer. Experience supporting environments with compliance obligations (SOC 2, NIST 800-171, or similar). Ability and desire to drive change through high-energy, can-do attitude, comfortable working in a high-performance, entrepreneurial, open-door environment Must be an outstanding communicator and team player who demonstrates attention to detail, and who also understands how to ensure finance initiatives that support the long-term strategy of the business Strong analytical and problem-solving skills Ability to work autonomously Attention to detail / detail oriented.
