Position: Director of Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE)

Location: Flexible: within the United States

Reporting to: CEO

Position Overview:

The Director of Health, Safety & Environmental is responsible for leading Brown Strauss’ health, safety & environmental compliance strategy across all company locations. This role partners closely with operations leaders to create an ownership-driven culture where every employee is responsible for working safely. The Director develops and implements safety programs, ensures regulatory compliance, investigates incidents, coaches leaders, and drives continuous improvement to reduce risk while supporting operational excellence. Environmental compliance responsibilities are an important component of this position.

The Director of Health, Safety & Environmental will play a key leadership role in advancing that culture across all operations.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute the company's safety strategy aligned with business objectives.
  • Build and sustain an ownership-driven safety culture across all locations.
  • Partner with Operations to reduce injuries while supporting operational excellence.
  • Lead incident investigations, root cause analyses, and corrective actions.
  • Seek and implement best practices in the service center industry.
  • Ensure compliance with OSHA, DOT, and applicable environmental regulations.
  • Oversee OSHA recordkeeping, safety audits, training, and regulatory reporting.
  • Support environmental compliance including, but not limited to waste management, stormwater, spill prevention, and applicable permitting.
  • Develop emergency response, crisis management, inclement weather policies, and workplace violence prevention programs.
  • Create executive dashboards tracking TRIR, DART, training, corrective actions, and workers' compensation trends.
  • Travel regularly to all company locations to coach leaders and verify standards. Appropriate attention to sites that need immediate improvement, but an overall presence across all sites must be maintained.
  • Additional duties as assigned.


Qualifications & Skills:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Engineering, Environmental Science, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.
  • 10+ years of progressively responsible safety leadership experience.
  • Multi-site manufacturing or industrial operations experience.
  • Experience in steel distribution, metals manufacturing, heavy industrial, construction materials, mining, energy, chemical processing, or similar industries strongly preferred.
  • Experience influencing senior leaders and building enterprise safety systems.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) preferred.
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP), CIH, CHMM, OSHA 30, or similar certifications are a plus.


Success Measures:

  • Reduce TRIR and DART year over year.
  • Improve proactive safety observations and employee engagement.
  • Maintain OSHA and environmental compliance.
  • Improve incident investigation quality and corrective action completion in a timely manner.
  • Reduce workers' compensation costs through prevention.
  • Strengthen Brown Strauss' employee-owner safety culture.


Physical Requirements:

  • Walk warehouses and yards routinely.
  • Climb stairs, ladders, and catwalks.
  • Wear required PPE.
  • Ability to lift up to 25 lbs.
  • Travel by air and automobile up to 60%.

Schedule:

  • Monday to Friday, remote


Location:

  • Flexible: Within the United States
  • 40-60% travel required
