MyFriendBen

Location: Remote (U.S.), preference for Denver, CO metro | Reports to: Executive Director Status: Full-Time, Exempt

Compensation: $80,000–145,000, commensurate with experience

About MyFriendBen

MyFriendBen is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to making it easy for people to understand and access the government benefits, tax credits, and nonprofit programs they're eligible for. Our free, anonymous online screening tool checks eligibility for 40+ programs in minutes and estimates their dollar value — with no cost to use and a promise never to sell user data.

Originally incubated at Gary Community Ventures in Colorado, MyFriendBen is now an independent nonprofit with its national hub based in Denver and is expanding into additional states. To date, MyFriendBen has connected more than 140,000 households to benefits, for an estimated $85 million in impact, with families identifying an average of $2,500 per month in benefits and tax credits.

As MyFriendBen scales nationally, our donors and funders — foundations, corporations, government grantors, and individuals who believe in equitable access to the safety net — are essential partners in that growth, as is the internal team and culture that supports it.

Position Summary

The Director of Operations is responsible for building and running the internal backbone of MyFriendBen — fundraising and grants, people operations, hiring and onboarding, team alignment, culture, and day-to-day organizational operations — so the organization can scale nationally without losing what makes it work. This role owns the systems, relationships, and practices that keep a fast-growing, distributed team funded, connected, effective, and aligned around MyFriendBen's mission.

The VP will manage a growing portfolio of fundraising and grant relationships — including grant writing, grant management, and donor stewardship — while also owning full-cycle hiring and onboarding, HR policies and practices, and team culture across a remote, multi-state staff. The role also oversees core operational functions, including finance and budget administration, vendor and systems management, and organizational planning, in partnership with the Executive Director.

This role works closely with the Executive Director, program, and leadership team, and reports regularly to the board of directors on fundraising results and organizational health. The ideal candidate brings progressive fundraising and operations experience, an entrepreneurial mindset, and genuine enthusiasm for MyFriendBen's mission of expanding access to public benefits.

This is a remote position with a preference for candidates based in or near Denver, CO, who can work periodically from MyFriendBen's Denver hub as needed.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Fundraising & Grants

  • Manage a growing portfolio of foundation, corporate, and government funders, guiding each through the full gift and grant cycle — identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship.
  • Research, write, and submit grant proposals and letters of inquiry that are compelling, accurate, and aligned with MyFriendBen's mission, data, and strategic priorities.
  • Own grant management end-to-end, including tracking deliverables, budgets, and deadlines, and preparing timely, accurate reports for foundation and government funders.
  • Build authentic, trust-based relationships with donors, board members, and funding partners, including drafting appeals, impact reports, and donor communications.
  • Maintain the fundraising and grants pipeline in MyFriendBen's donor database/CRM, and report revenue projections and progress toward goals to leadership and the board.
  • Represent MyFriendBen at funder convenings, conferences, and donor events, and stay current on philanthropic trends and the public-benefits/anti-poverty funding landscape.

People, Hiring & Culture

  • Own full-cycle hiring — job postings, sourcing, interview coordination, and offer management — in partnership with hiring managers across the organization.
  • Design and run onboarding so new hires ramp quickly, understand MyFriendBen's mission and systems, and feel connected to the team from day one.
  • Build and maintain HR infrastructure, including policies, employee handbook, benefits administration, and compliance across the states where MyFriendBen has staff.
  • Own team culture as a core priority, leading practices — all-hands meetings, team rituals, feedback loops, recognition programs, and retreats — that keep a remote, distributed staff connected, engaged, and aligned as the organization scales.
  • Champion transparency, trust, and shared purpose, using regular staff surveys and check-ins to monitor morale and strengthen retention.
  • Support performance management, including goal-setting, check-ins, and professional development planning for staff.
  • Serve as a trusted resource for staff on people-related questions, and help resolve team or interpersonal issues as they arise.

Operations & Organizational Effectiveness

  • Oversee day-to-day organizational operations, including budget administration, contracts, vendor management, and internal systems (HRIS, project management, communication tools).
  • Partner with the Executive Director on annual operating plans, budget projections, and organizational strategy, including fundraising and grant revenue targets.
  • Develop and maintain internal policies and processes that support a growing, multi-state team, ensuring consistency, compliance, and efficiency.
  • Regularly report on organizational health — fundraising results, staffing, budget, and operational metrics — to leadership and the board of directors.
  • Manage relationships with outside vendors (payroll, benefits, HR/legal counsel, IT) and evaluate new tools or partners as needs evolve.
  • Identify and implement improvements to internal operations as MyFriendBen expands into new states.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Working knowledge of nonprofit fundraising, grant writing, and grant management, including funder reporting and compliance requirements.
    • Familiarity with IRS rules governing charitable gifts and the Donor Bill of Rights.
    • Working knowledge of HR practices, employment law fundamentals, and people operations across multiple states.
    • Experience building or scaling hiring, onboarding, and culture programs at a growing organization.
    • Strong understanding of nonprofit operations, including budgeting, compliance, and vendor management.
    • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to craft persuasive proposals and handle sensitive personnel matters with equal skill.
    • Ability to build trust and alignment across a remote, distributed team.
    • Entrepreneurial spirit and independent problem-solving ability, with comfort operating in a small, fast-growing nonprofit environment.
    • Proficiency with donor CRM/database systems, HRIS, project management, and general operations/systems tools.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
    • 5+ years of experience in nonprofit fundraising, grant writing/management, operations, or people management, with a demonstrated track record in at least two of these areas.
    • Experience cultivating and soliciting gifts and/or managing grants from individuals, corporations, foundations, and/or government funders.
    • Experience managing organizational operations and/or people programs, ideally within a mission-driven or startup-style nonprofit environment.

    Preferred:

    • Passion for MyFriendBen's mission of expanding equitable, dignified access to public benefits.
    • Experience fundraising or writing grants for a technology-enabled or data-driven nonprofit program.
    • Experience building team culture and people programs across multiple states with distributed teams.

    Work Environment and Travel
    • Remote and hybrid position; preference for candidates based in or near Denver, CO, with flexibility to work periodically from MyFriendBen's Denver hub.
    • Up to 20% travel expected for donor visits, conferences, team retreats, and organizational events; some weekend work may be required.
