Distribution Designer Job Description The Distribution Designer role sits within the Distribution Department and focuses on the engineering and design of overhead and underground distribution lines ranging from 4 kV to 69 kV. You will create and review work packages for overhead, underground residential distribution (URD), re-conductoring, and asset replacement projects, ensuring all designs meet client quality, safety, and consistency standards. This position combines detailed technical design, coordination with internal and external stakeholders, and field-oriented support throughout the project lifecycle. Responsibilities Design and review overhead and underground distribution lines from 4 kV to 69 kV, ensuring compliance with applicable engineering and construction specifications. Develop comprehensive work packages for overhead, URD, re-conductoring, asset replacement, and underground cable/conduit distribution projects. Design complex overhead and underground distribution projects in both urban and rural environments, incorporating client engineering and construction standards. Perform field engineering of project requirements, including site evaluations and identification of conflicting utilities. Conduct engineering and design calculations to support distribution line design and related infrastructure. Program and specify protective line equipment as part of distribution design packages. Coordinate small design teams as needed to develop budgets, prepare scoping documents, define design criteria, and deliver complete project packages. Provide engineering assistance to clients during construction, including participation in construction meetings and coordination efforts. Support community outreach activities related to distribution projects when required. Identify when project objectives are not being met and initiate corrective actions to realign scope, schedule, or quality. Interpret relevant codes and regulations and apply them to the development of standards for construction projects. Promote engineering professionalism and adherence to established standards across all design activities. Develop, recommend, and implement plans for complex engineering projects by establishing goals, objectives, schedules, resource needs, and information requirements. Essential Skills Minimum of a High School Diploma or GED. At least 2+ years of experience in utility, telecommunications, joint use, or make-ready design. Hands-on experience with utility distribution design, including overhead and underground systems. Experience with joint use and make-ready design for distribution infrastructure. Ability to perform pole loading analysis and interpret results for safe and compliant designs. Experience with telecom attachment design and related standards. Proficiency in utility design practices, including power distribution design concepts. Ability to interpret and apply engineering codes, regulations, and construction standards. Strong capability to identify conflicting utilities and incorporate solutions into design packages. Experience preparing complete work packages for overhead, URD, re-conductoring, and asset replacement projects. Ability to coordinate with design teams and support budget development, scoping, and project documentation. Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to identify issues and implement corrective actions during project execution. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate degree in drafting, engineering technology, construction management, or a related technical field (preferred). Technical training, certifications, or coursework related to utility design, telecommunications, CAD, or electric utility infrastructure (preferred). Experience with joint use or make-ready projects supporting electric utilities or telecommunications providers. Familiarity with JETS software for utility or joint use design. Experience using AutoCAD, MicroStation, or other utility design platforms. Exposure to or experience with large utility program environments and associated processes (preferred). Strong communication skills to interact with clients, construction teams, and community stakeholders. Ability to promote and uphold engineering professionalism and best practices within project teams. Job Type & Location This is a Permanent position based out of Atlanta, GA.
