Ecologist

Position: Ecologist (Field Surveyor)

Location: Remote (UK-based) with site visits as required

Contract Type: Full-time or Part-time (flexible)

Working Pattern: Home-based with fieldwork

Who We Are

We are a growing, multidisciplinary environmental consultancy, bringing together ecologists, Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) specialists, and arboricultural professionals.

Our work focuses on delivering high-quality ecological surveys, impact assessment, and planning support, underpinned by strong field expertise and robust, consistent methodologies.

We are committed to innovation, research, and continuous learning, recognising that the strongest ecological outcomes are built on developing knowledge, expanding expertise, and investing in the growth of our people.

As a smaller consultancy, we offer a collaborative environment where individuals can contribute ideas, influence how we develop, and play a meaningful role in shaping the direction of the company.

About the Role

We are seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Ecologist to join our team, to support the delivery of ecological surveys and reporting across a range of projects.

This is a hands-on role with a strong focus on field survey work, alongside the preparation of Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs), Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs), and Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs).

The role is primarily home-based, with site visits undertaken as required. It offers a flexible balance between fieldwork and remote working, while maintaining a strong emphasis on practical, site-based ecology.

This position provides an opportunity not only to deliver high-quality ecological work but also to work closely with clients, contribute to knowledge sharing within the team, and help shape how we approach ecological services as a business.

Key Responsibilities

- Conduct a range of ecological field surveys, including:

o Habitat surveys (UKHab / Extended Phase 1)

o Protected species surveys (as required)

- Collect and manage field data using GIS-enabled tools and digital survey platforms

- Plan and coordinate survey work, taking account of seasonal constraints

- Produce high-quality technical reports, including:

o Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs)

o Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs) (or contribute depending on experience)

o Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs)

o Survey reports and technical notes

- Analyse survey data to support impact assessment and planning submissions, providing clear, practical ecological advice.

- Provide ecological input and support to the wider team on arboricultural (Arb) and Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments, where required

- Work collaboratively with project teams and contribute to project delivery

- Travel to sites as required, working flexibly to meet survey demands and seasonal survey requirements, including early starts, evening surveys, and overnight stays.

- Contribute to internal knowledge sharing, including:

o Supporting knowledge exchange within the team

o Sharing experience from fieldwork and reporting

- Helping to build consistency and company best practice across projects

Required Skills & Experience

- Degree in Ecology, Environmental Science, or a related discipline

- Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork, including early starts, evening surveys, and overnight stays

- Demonstrable experience in ecological field survey work

- Strong habitat identification and classification skills (UKHab / Extended Phase 1)

- Experience undertaking habitat and protected species surveys

- Experience preparing, contributing to, and/or reviewing:

o Preliminary Ecological Appraisals (PEAs)

o Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)

o Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs)

o Ecological survey reports and technical notes

- Strong technical report writing and review skills, with excellent attention to detail

- Good knowledge of UK habitats, protected species, and ecological survey methodologies

- Good understanding of UK wildlife legislation, planning policy, and the development planning process

- Strong organisational, planning, and time-management skills

- Protected species survey experience (e.g. bats, great crested newts, badgers, birds)

Desirable Skills & Experience

- Proficiency in GIS software and spatial data management tools (e.g. QGIS, ArcGIS)

- Experience using field data collection systems and digital survey platforms (e.g. Survey123, Collector, mobile GIS applications)

- Competency in spatial data analysis and ecological data management

- Ability to work independently in a remote, field-led environment

- Ability to communicate effectively with clients, project teams, and other stakeholders

- Experience coordinating survey programmes and managing workloads to meet project deadlines

- Willingness to contribute to team learning, knowledge sharing, and professional development initiatives

- Experience contributing to Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessments

- Familiarity with Biodiversity Net Gain principles and the Defra Biodiversity Metric

- Experience leading or authoring Ecological Impact Assessments (EcIAs)

- Experience undertaking or contributing to Habitat Regulations Assessments (HRAs)

- Experience using remote sensing, spatial analytics, or advanced GIS techniques

- Experience using specialist ecological software

- Experience managing small projects, workstreams, or client relationships

- Experience mentoring, supporting, or training colleagues

- Experience working alongside arboricultural assessments and multidisciplinary environmental teams

- Membership of, or working towards membership of, CIEEM

- Relevant outdoor working, health and safety, or First Aid qualifications

What We Offer

- Flexible remote-first working, combined with varied field-based project work.

- Option for full-time or part-time hours.

- A field-led ecology role with a strong balance of survey, assessment, and reporting work

- A supportive, collaborative, and growing team environment where individuals can contribute ideas and help shape the business

- Opportunities for training, professional development, and career progression

- Exposure to a diverse range of ecological projects, working alongside BNG and arboricultural specialists

- Competitive salary, dependent on experience

- A culture that values research, knowledge sharing, and continuous learning, with opportunities to contribute to the ongoing development of the business and its technical expertise.
