Job Title: Electrical Design Engineer III Job Description The Electrical Design Engineer III leads the design of low-voltage electrical power distribution, signal networks, and auxiliary equipment for gas turbine projects. This role focuses on industrial facility power distribution up to 600 VAC and 220 VDC, including systems such as motor control centers, switchgear, low-voltage transformers, DC systems, and batteries. The engineer develops detailed design documentation, ensures compliance with applicable electrical codes and standards, supports manufacturing and commissioning activities, and mentors junior engineers while contributing to continuous improvement of product designs and project execution. Responsibilities Lead the design of electrical power distribution and signal networks, including auxiliary equipment for gas turbine projects, primarily on low-voltage systems (600 V and below). Develop comprehensive electrical design documentation such as single-line diagrams, panelboard schedules, electrical load lists, motor lists, wiring diagrams, control schematics, cable schedules, and termination schedules. Create power system plans, lighting plans, electrical room layouts, elevation drawings, conduit and cable tray arrangements, and hazardous area classifications. Perform engineering calculations for equipment sizing, including breakers, overload devices, and relays, as well as cable, conduit, and equipment spacing, and illumination level calculations. Maintain bills of materials and execute other design duties required by the complexity of each project. Develop and review electrical, control, and instrumentation wiring diagrams and cable lists generated by SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) or SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI). Prepare purchase specifications for electrical equipment and participate in vendor selection for electrical packages. Generate electrical drawing packages used by engineers, designers, and drafters to document logic, point-to-point wiring, and system interactions. Interpret and design in accordance with electrical code requirements from the authority having jurisdiction over each project’s installation. Investigate, understand, and interpret applicable electrical codes and standards, including NEC/NFPA 70, CEC, IEC, ISA, AGA, and others, and apply them effectively in designs. Meet regularly with vendors to ensure all technical and schedule requirements are understood and met. Interpret and integrate design requirements received from the parent organization or other stakeholders into project designs. Respond to technical inquiries from customers, vendors, and field personnel, providing clear and accurate technical guidance. Use SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL), SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI), and SmartPlant 3D (S3D), or comparable database-driven software, to design electrical power and control systems. Apply current working knowledge of electrical and instrumentation design for industrial facilities to deliver robust and compliant solutions. Support projects involving generators rated 150 MVA and above for gas or steam turbines and their auxiliaries; leverage power plant experience where applicable. Comply with all safety policies, practices, and procedures, and promptly report unsafe activities or conditions. Participate in proactive team efforts to achieve departmental and company goals. Contribute to building a positive team spirit and collaborative work environment. Communicate effectively with all levels of employees, including engineering, operations, and support functions. Handle various engineering assignments, including rework, in a timely manner to meet schedule deadlines. Follow established policies, procedures, and safety guidelines in daily work activities. Ensure product quality by following standard work and process instructions, and identify any potential risks to product quality. Develop schedules, coordinate, and manage electrical design activities for projects of all sizes with minimal supervision from the project lead. Simplify product designs to improve manufacturability and reduce cost while maintaining product quality and functional requirements. Assist Sales, Marketing, and Development Engineering with projects that enhance existing products and support development of new product lines. Meet schedule requirements for project engineering deliverables and ensure timely completion of design packages. Provide technical support during manufacturing and commissioning of equipment, including resolving design-related issues. Lead junior engineers and interns, providing guidance, mentoring, and support for their technical and professional development. Travel up to approximately 10% of the time to support project, vendor, or site-related activities as required. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering. Minimum 7 years of technical and practical experience in industrial facility power distribution design up to 600 VAC and 220 VDC with signal propagation; 5 or more years of experience strongly desired. Demonstrated experience in electrical design for industrial plants, including low-voltage power distribution and control systems. Ability to design and document electrical systems, including single-line diagrams, one-line diagrams, panel schedules, load lists, motor lists, wiring diagrams, schematics, and cable schedules. Hands-on experience with motor control centers (MCCs), switchgear, low-voltage transformers, AC and DC systems, batteries, and related equipment. Strong familiarity with the National Electrical Code (NEC) / NFPA 70 and ability to apply code requirements to industrial electrical designs. Knowledge of electrical codes, industry standards, and best practices, including NEMA, IEC, IEEE, ISA, ANSI, NFPA 70E, UL, CSA, TUV, and AGA. Proficiency or strong familiarity with SmartPlant Electrical (SPEL) for electrical design and data management. Experience using SmartPlant Instrumentation (SPI) for instrumentation and control wiring documentation. Experience with SmartPlant 3D (S3D) for at least 2 years, or significant expertise in creating electrical tray and conduit specifications, designing trays and conduits, generating drawings, and extracting bills of materials. Ability to work with database-driven engineering software tools and maintain accurate project data. Working knowledge of AutoCAD for electrical drafting and design documentation. Experience developing power system plans, lighting plans, electrical room layouts, conduit and cable tray arrangements, and hazardous area classifications. Capability to perform detailed engineering calculations for equipment sizing, cable and conduit sizing, spacing, and illumination levels. Familiarity with lighting calculation software (such as DIALux or Visual) and the ability to perform lighting analyses and interpret results against code requirements. Strong communication skills to interact effectively with internal teams, customers, vendors, and field personnel. Ability to manage multiple design tasks, meet deadlines, and work with minimal supervision on projects of varying size and complexity. Commitment to safety, quality, and adherence to established policies and procedures. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience working with generators rated 150 MVA and above for gas or steam turbines and associated auxiliary systems. Power plant experience, particularly with gas or steam turbine installations, is a plus. Inclination toward or familiarity with computer programming languages is highly encouraged. Expertise in SmartPlant Electrical, including report creation and modification, symbol creation, filter and rules creation, reference data management, batch mode operations, and effective utilization of the tool, is a strong advantage. Past experience with SmartPlant Instrumentation and SmartSketch is desirable. Experience with Revit 3D or other comparable 3D electrical design tools will be considered as an alternative or complement to SmartPlant 3D. Additional experience with AutoCAD beyond basic usage is beneficial. Ability to simplify complex product designs to improve manufacturability and reduce costs without compromising quality or function. Experience supporting manufacturing and commissioning activities, including troubleshooting and resolving design-related issues in the field. Demonstrated ability to mentor and lead junior engineers and interns. Strong teamwork orientation and ability to contribute to a positive, collaborative work culture.
