Responsibilities Develop detailed utility designs for overhead and underground electrical distribution projects. Create, update, and maintain design drawings using AutoCAD from initial concept through final design completion. Build project designs starting from existing plans and base maps and carry them through to fully developed final designs. Prepare and update base mapping for a wide range of utility projects. Assist with residential, commercial, and subdivision utility design projects, ensuring accurate and timely deliverables. Support overhead-to-underground conversion projects by producing accurate designs and documentation. Coordinate closely with project managers, QA/QC personnel, and internal design teams to ensure alignment on project scope, schedule, and quality standards. Utilize Microsoft Excel and Word to create and maintain project documentation, reports, and tracking tools. Ensure all designs comply with company, client, and utility standards, as well as applicable guidelines and best practices. Contribute to a collaborative team environment by sharing knowledge, participating in design reviews, and supporting continuous improvement efforts. Essential Skills Strong proficiency in AutoCAD, including working with attributes and the ability to start designs from ground zero using existing plans and base maps. Minimum of 6 months of experience working with electrical systems for utilities or telecommunications. Experience with base mapping for utility or related projects. Exposure to electrical or utilities design, including overhead and/or underground distribution systems. Hands-on experience in design and drafting within an electrical design or electrical engineering context. Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Microsoft Excel and Word, for project documentation and reporting. Ability to create complete designs from initial plan review through final deliverables. Strong attention to detail and commitment to meeting established design standards and requirements. Effective communication and collaboration skills for working with project managers, QA/QC staff, and internal design teams. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in electrical utility or telecommunications design, including overhead, underground, or distribution projects. Experience in CAD-based drafting and design within a utility, electrical engineering, or telecommunications environment. Interest in growing into design or project management roles over time. Ability to work effectively in a structured team environment with defined roles such as QA/QC, project management, and internal designers. Motivation to participate in mentorship and structured career development programs offered by the organization. Willingness to support a variety of project types, including residential, commercial, and subdivision utility designs, as well as overhead-to-underground conversions. Work Environment The role follows a flexible Monday through Friday schedule, with an 8-hour workday and a flex start and end time between 6:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The position operates in a hybrid work model, with four days in the office and one day remote per week. You will work within a collaborative team structure that includes a Director of T&D Operations, a QA/QC manager, a project manager, and multiple designers. You will use AutoCAD, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft Word regularly, and you will work in an office setting designed to support focused design work and effective teamwork. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Phoenix, AZ. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $35.00/hr.
