Job Summary “ Depending upon the qualifications of the successful applicant, the hiring manager may elect to fill this position at a higher level within the job hierarchy.” This position supports an engineering team responsible for delivering electric distribution solutions for residential, commercial, industrial, and municipal customers. Engineers manage projects from concept through construction while collaborating with customers, developers, contractors, and operations personnel to ensure successful project delivery and an excellent customer experience. In this role, the engineer will serve within the distribution business unit, acting as the primary contact for customers, stakeholders, and internal teams throughout the entire lifecycle of new construction projects. Whether managing commercial or residential work orders, the engineer will take ownership of each project, ensuring clear communication and coordination from initial customer request through project completion. The successful candidate will be highly customer service oriented, capable of anticipating and addressing client needs, and adept at building relationships with diverse groups. The Engineer III position is the advanced level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer III position solve complex problems in engineering areas of specialization with limited supervision. An Engineer III is expected to develop advanced skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer III effectively applies fundamental concepts and procedures to work that is progressively complex and varied. The Senior Engineer manages work in engineering areas of specialization, with minimal supervision. The Senior Engineer is expected to develop advanced skills and to have the ability to work independently, with guidance limited to unusual or complex projects or issues. Employees in the Senior Engineer position are fully competent in the use of concepts and procedures. The Senior Engineer identifies problems, develops solutions and takes action to resolve. Responsibilities Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity, Contributes to team decision-making in the accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities, Deals with changing priorities and differing situations and makes decisions that may affect the work of the team, Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of increasing scope and complexity, Conducts engineering and related studies Completes routine engineering projects with minimal oversight with increasing ability to independently manage project schedules and interfaces; increasingly competent to design, operate and maintain systems with moderate impact on existing systems, Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices and procedures; proficient in technical and analytical competencies, Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities, Demonstrates effective verbal and written communication skills, Maintains accurate records and files, and Supports the company’s goals and represents the company positively and professionally Basic/Required Note: This posting is for one open position. Dependent on relevant experience, the level to which a candidate is aligned is outlined below. Engineer III Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree. Senior Engineer Must have obtained Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program or PE Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer. A Master's degree in Engineering will be considered in lieu of the B.S. Engineering degree Desired Qualifications Electrical, Mechanical or Civil Engineering degrees preferred. Experience with CAD software, PoleForeman, and/or Maximo. Additional Preferred Qualifications Passing grade on the Engineering Fundamentals Exam. Increasingly proficient in principles of project management. Experience in the utility industry. Department specific experience applicable to the hiring department. Demonstrated advancing application of engineering theories and principles. Increasingly proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, preparing and presenting recommendations. Good written and oral communication skills. Working Conditions Hybrid – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility. Reliable, consistent transportation is required to ensure timely arrival at the applicable facility. The engineer will be required to field visit nearly every customer's construction site.
