Engineering Manager - Content Team

THE ROLE & THE TEAM Join us to help drive the development of the ZMS advertisement platform that strives to inspire, engage and inform Zalando shoppers through unparalleled brand-curated and highly relevant advertising experiences, seamlessly supporting our customer’s shopping journey by empowering our partners to promote their brand, stories, and products. As the Engineering Manager of the Content team, you will lead six engineers responsible for the content that Zalando partners (brands, retailers, etc) show in Zalando, including organic and sponsored content. You will own both the look and feel of the different formats, like Boards, Landing Pages and Ads as well as the Content Workspace tooling that partners use to upload assets and compose these formats. Your leadership will directly impact ZMS's ability to scale revenue growth from advertising, by enabling self-service content management tooling and creating formats that are engaging for the users and that our partners will want to sponsor to appear prominently across the Zalando website. Demonstrate strong product ownership and product insight: Deeply understand the product, market, and business context to inform technical strategy, constructively challenge priorities when needed, and ensure engineering efforts are aligned with maximum business impact. Strategic Architecture & Hands-on Leadership: Oversee the technical direction and drive technical excellence in our core systems. While your primary focus is leadership, you remain technically sharp - ready to participate in architecture reviews or dive into the code to help the team unblock complex challenges. Elevate Quality: Define and enforce engineering standards. From CI/CD pipelines to robust testing strategies (TDD/E2E), you ensure that "quality" is a core feature of every release. Be accountable for the delivery of secure, high-performance services, managing infrastructure costs and making informed trade-offs between scalability, reliability, and maintainability of codebases. WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF Proven Leadership: You have a proven track record of leading an engineering team in a fast-paced environment where you have created a culture of trust, growth, and responsibility. Technical Roots: You have a solid background in Full Stack Software Engineering, specifically with frontend technologies, including React, and various backend technologies, including Node.js and the JVM ecosystem (Kotlin/Java). Experience in the development of mobile apps (iOS, Android) is a plus. Architecture & Cloud: You are well-versed in modern architecture patterns (Microservices, Event-Driven, REST/OpenAPI) and have experience with AWS services and containerization. You understand how to build resilient systems that are customer facing, scalable and maintainable. Hands-on Mentality: You are a leader who can still "talk shop" with Senior Engineers and Principals, conduct meaningful architecture reviews, and contribute to complex architectural decisions. Business Acumen: You can translate technical debt and infrastructure needs into clear business value for stakeholders, particularly regarding user-facing interfaces. You understand the importance of regulations like the European Accessibility Act and have experience introducing compliance to them. Communication: You are a fluent English communicator who can navigate technical complexity and business requirements with equal ease. You act as a seamless bridge between Engineering, Product, and Sales, resolving roadblocks and aligning expectations.
