How You’ll Make an Impact As a Biologist, you’ll play a critical role in supporting Dudek’s biological resource field staffing needs and coordination. You’ll be working closely with project managers, technical leads, and field biologists by using your biological background and expertise to allocate the right staff with the correct qualifications, in the appropriate region, and availability- all while prioritizing safety. You’ll coordinate daily field mobilization activities, and ensure staff are prepared for project deployment. Your work directly supports Dudek’s business goals by maintaining clear communication with field staff, anticipating logistical needs, and helping project teams allocate the right resources at the right time. To better assist Dudek’s staffing needs, this position requires a strong understanding of biological survey methods including protocol surveys, seasonal survey limitations, permitting requirements, and logistical field operations. In addition to managing field staffing and logistics, you’ll continue to utilize your biological background and assist in fieldwork or office based technical writing tasks including: botanical surveys, wildlife surveys, and aquatic resource delineations; and work collaboratively with other Dudek staff. Duties and Responsibilities Serve as the primary coordinator for biological resource field staffing needs using your biological background with protocol survey methods, seasonal survey limitations, permitting requirements, and field logistics. Work closely with project managers, technical leads, and other internal team members to determine anticipated field staffing needs and identify the most appropriate field staff for project sites while prioritizing safety. Maintain and regularly update staff experience, skills, permitting, training, and availability to support field staffing. Participate in regular scheduling meetings with internal practice groups and project managers. Contribute to weekly as-needed staffing schedules. Provide staff schedules to appropriate members including project managers, firmwide services groups, and the field staff members themselves. Conduct biological fieldwork as needed, work in remote field locations, hike steep slopes, and work full days in all types of weather. Assist in rare plant surveys, wildlife surveys, habitat assessments, vegetation mapping, and aquatic resource delineations. Prepare reports summarizing methodology, field survey results and recommendations with oversight from senior-level staff. Ability to work as member of a team and independently to make decisions and complete tasks on time and within budget. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental science or related natural resources field. A minimum of 5 years of experience in biological resource consulting (or equivalent experience in a regulatory agency setting) with increasing levels of responsibility. Strong written and communication skills Organized with the ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook Basic problem resolution skills Self-motivated with an interest in learning and growing as part of a project team, while also able to work independently Dependable and able to work flexible hours Must possess a valid driver’s license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by the first day of employment Knowledge and understanding of special-status plant species, vegetation communities, and sensitive vegetation resources that occur in the Southern California region. Knowledge of state and federal statutes, regulations, and permitting requirements relating to biological resources, in particular, the federal Clean Water Act, state and federal Endangered Species Acts, California Porter-Cologne Water Quality Control Act, and California Fish and Game Code. Willingness to travel for work, including overnight stays in hotels. Must possess a valid driver’s license and have active personal automobile liability insurance by first day of employment. Preferred Qualifications Two years of experience in a logistics or scheduling role Master’s degree in biology, ecology, botany, environmental science or related natural resources field. Experience maintaining and updating information within database software Compensation: $80,000-$90,000 annually* *Final agreed-upon compensation will be based on a variety of factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s related experience, education, certifications, skills, and work location. Successful candidates must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check prior to beginning employment. Working Conditions This job operates in a remote or office-based environment and this role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, printers, etc. This job requires occasional project site visits, based outdoors which can include excessive noise, uneven walking surfaces, extreme weather, and moving vehicles and equipment. Physical Requirements The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. This job requires the following: Working on a computer, sitting, or standing for long periods of time in an office or remote office setting. Employees must be capable of bending, squatting, climbing ladders, and lifting up to 35 lbs. unassisted; 50lbs in a team lift (two or more employees). This job requires attending meetings, both in person and virtually as well as speaking on the phone with government agency representatives, members of the public, and others. Speaking, hearing and listening are required. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
