About the Role The Essential Skills Facilitator supports adult learners, particularly newcomers to Canada, in developing the foundational skills needed for employment, community participation, and everyday life in Canada. This role designs and delivers engaging, learner-centred training that strengthens communication, digital literacy, workplace readiness, problem-solving, teamwork, and other essential skills. Through classroom facilitation, assessment, coaching, and individualized support, the Facilitator helps participants build confidence, overcome barriers, achieve employment goals, and successfully navigate Canadian workplaces and communities. What You’ll Do Design and deliver learner-centred essential-skills training for adult learners and newcomers through in-person, virtual, and blended formats. Provide language and basic writing instruction as part of essential-skills and workplace-readiness training. Develop lesson plans, activities, assessments, and learning materials based on participant needs and adult-learning principles. Incorporate practical workplace and everyday-life scenarios that support employment and settlement success. Assess learner strengths, needs, and barriers and develop individualized learning and action plans. Provide one-on-one coaching, feedback, encouragement, and goal-setting support, adjusting instructional strategies based on learner progress. Help participants develop resumes and cover letters, strengthen job-search and networking strategies, prepare for interviews, and understand Canadian workplace expectations. Create an inclusive and culturally responsive learning environment that encourages participation and learner success. Coordinate practical learning opportunities, including workplace simulations, guest speakers, and employer connections. Connect participants with appropriate internal and external services and supports. Build relationships with employers, community organizations, educational institutions, and partner agencies, and participate in outreach, information sessions, and participant recruitment. Collaborate with Employment Counsellors, Settlement Practitioners, Job Developers, language and training staff, and other program teams to support participant success. Maintain accurate participant records, complete organizational and funder reporting, and contribute to program evaluation and continuous improvement. Ensure program delivery complies with organizational policies, procedures, and funder requirements. What It Takes Strong learner-centred facilitation, presentation, coaching, and classroom-management skills. Ability to design engaging learning activities and adapt instruction based on participant needs and progress. Strong intercultural communication skills and the ability to create an inclusive learning environment. Knowledge of employment readiness, workforce development, and essential-skills frameworks. Strong relationship-building, collaboration, problem-solving, and organizational abilities. Commitment to inclusion, continuous learning, and participant success. What You Bring An adult education and/or ESL education credential is required. A diploma or bachelor’s degree in Adult Education, Career Development, Human Services, Social Work, Education, Workforce Development, or a related field. Minimum two years of experience facilitating adult education, employment programs, workforce-development initiatives, settlement services, or related training. Experience working with culturally diverse populations. Proficiency with Microsoft 365, virtual-learning platforms, online collaboration tools, and electronic record-management systems. Experience maintaining confidential participant records and program documentation. Successful Vulnerable Sector Check and Intervention Record Check. Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends based on program needs. Preferred / Asset Qualifications Experience supporting newcomers, immigrants, refugees, or English-language learners. Experience facilitating CLB-informed or language-sensitive programming. Knowledge of Canadian labour-market information, community resources, and settlement systems. Experience delivering online, hybrid, or technology-enhanced instruction. Valid Alberta Class 5 Driver’s Licence and access to a reliable vehicle.
