Position Overview The Estimator is responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for asphalt paving, concrete, and heavy civil construction projects. Working closely with the Project Management, Contracts, and Operations teams, the Estimator develops detailed bid proposals, evaluates project risks, and supports the successful transition of awarded projects into construction. The ideal candidate has strong analytical and organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and experience estimating asphalt paving, sitework, or heavy highway construction projects. The ability to manage multiple deadlines while maintaining accuracy is essential. Key Responsibilities Prepare accurate and competitive estimates for asphalt paving, concrete, milling, earthwork, aggregate, and heavy civil construction projects. Analyze project plans, specifications, bid documents, geotechnical reports, and contract requirements to determine project scope and pricing. Perform electronic quantity takeoffs and onsite field measurements for paving, concrete, grading, drainage, and related construction activities. Conduct pre-bid site visits to evaluate existing conditions, verify project scope, and identify potential construction challenges. Calculate labor, equipment, material, trucking, subcontractor, production, and overhead costs to develop complete project estimates. Solicit and evaluate quotations from subcontractors, suppliers, and vendors to ensure competitive and accurate pricing. Prepare complete bid packages, including estimates, proposal letters, qualifications, exclusions, bid forms, and supporting documentation. Participate in internal bid review meetings and assist management in developing competitive bidding strategies. Identify constructability concerns, scheduling conflicts, contract risks, and value engineering opportunities that may affect project cost or execution. Coordinate with Project Management and Operations to ensure a seamless project turnover following contract award. Communicate with owners, general contractors, engineers, municipalities, subcontractors, and suppliers regarding project requirements and bid clarifications. Track bid opportunities, maintain estimating schedules, and ensure proposals are submitted accurately and on time. Maintain current knowledge of material pricing, labor productivity, equipment costs, trucking rates, and market conditions affecting the asphalt and heavy civil construction industry. Develop and maintain strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, suppliers, and industry partners. Prepare estimating reports, bid logs, cost analyses, and other reports requested by management. Manage multiple estimates simultaneously while maintaining exceptional accuracy and meeting strict deadlines. Perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned. Qualifications Minimum of 3–5 years of estimating experience in asphalt paving, concrete, heavy civil, highway, or site development construction. Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered. Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel. Experience with estimating and takeoff software such as E-Takeoff, Bluebeam Revu, Adobe Acrobat Pro, HCSS HeavyBid, AGTEK, B2W Estimate, ComputerEase (CE), or similar software is preferred. Strong understanding of construction plans, specifications, contracts, and estimating principles. Excellent mathematical, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to prioritize multiple projects while consistently meeting deadlines. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively. Professional, positive, and team-oriented attitude. Demonstrated leadership, accountability, and sound decision-making skills. Willingness to accept additional responsibilities as business needs evolve. Knowledge & Skills Mid-level estimating position. Knowledge of asphalt paving, concrete construction, milling, grading, drainage, and heavy civil construction practices. Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, contracts, and bid documents. Understanding of production rates, labor productivity, equipment utilization, trucking logistics, and job costing. Familiarity with TxDOT specifications, municipal bidding requirements, and public works construction is preferred. Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines. Working Conditions Hybrid work environment consisting of office and remote field work. Travel throughout Texas for site visits, pre-bid meetings, and project evaluations as required. Full-time, hourly position. Occasional overtime, evenings, and weekends may be required to meet bid deadlines. Must successfully comply with the Company's drug and alcohol testing requirements. Periodic attendance at company meetings, training sessions, and employee events is required.
