Expatriate Tax Lawyer – Freelancer

We are an international legal services firm specializing in immigration law in Spain and Portugal. In addition, we provide services in Global Mobility, Corporate & Real Estate, Tax, and Litigation.

We support individuals and companies relocating to Spain and Portugal, helping them navigate complex immigration and cross-border legal matters with clarity and confidence.

We are currently looking for an Expatriate Tax Lawyer based in Portugal to collaborate with us on a freelance basis. The ideal candidate will have proven experience in tax advisory for expatriates, particularly Anglo-Saxon clients, and a strong understanding of international tax structuring.

The ideal candidate should have in-depth knowledge of:

• The Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) Regime in Portugal


• Taxation of non-resident income


• International tax optimization strategies for high-net-worth individuals

Main Responsibilities

• Advise international (primarily English-speaking) clients on Portuguese tax strategies, with a focus on optimization and risk mitigation


• Manage applications and procedures under the Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) Regime, ensuring full compliance


• Analyze tax implications related to foreign-sourced income, capital gains, and passive income


• Design tailored tax strategies aligned with each client’s global structure


• Act as the main point of contact for expatriate clients, coordinating with immigration and mobility teams when necessary


• Stay up to date with legislative developments at national and international levels affecting expatriate taxation

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Law, Economics, or Business Administration, with specialization in Taxation or International Taxation


• Strong practical expertise in the Portuguese NHR Regime


• Advanced English and Portuguese (C1 level or above), both written and spoken


• Excellent communication skills and a client-oriented approach


• Ability to manage client relationships independently

Spanish is a plus.

Valued Qualifications

• Experience in international environments or firms focused on global mobility


• Familiarity with tax management tools and related software


• Knowledge of additional international tax regimes
