The Software Development Engineer in Test 5 on the Tree Foundation team is a senior, master-level role responsible for leading the design, development, and maintenance of test software that supports complex, highly scalable data systems powering the Tree Foundation platform. This includes systems built on distributed data technologies such as Cassandra and graph-oriented data models that represent relationships at global scale. As a technical leader, this role partners with senior engineering and data architecture leadership to define and implement test strategy for distributed, highly available, and eventually consistent systems. This includes establishing standards, best practices, and architectural patterns for validating data integrity, lineage correctness, and graph relationship consistency across services. This individual works with divine guidance to provide or support technology that furthers the mission of the Church and reflects the eternal impact of the gospel. We value early, mid and late-career candidates and encourage all applicants with the posted skills and abilities to apply. In a sophisticated, multi-faceted environment, this role will lead one or more teams in the development of automated software tests, including architecting comprehensive testing frameworks that validate data correctness across Cassandra clusters, graph traversal accuracy within Tree Foundation models, and system resiliency under high throughput, replication, and failure scenarios. Specific Responsibilities include: Strategically partner with technical leadership to define system architecture, standards, and best practices for test automation, including performance validation (latency, throughput, resource utilization), backward compatibility, and safe data migration for evolving schemas and graph structures Lead peer reviews and provide technical leadership in test automation, including solutions for eventual consistency, conflict resolution, and large-scale data propagation across distributed systems Mentor and train engineers, with a focus on solving complex distributed system challenges and building robust, data-aware test systems Design and execute automated testing strategies, including fault injection, chaos testing for database reliability, and performance benchmarking and capacity planning for read/write-intensive systems Develop automated test code, including load and stress tests that simulate real-world genealogical usage patterns, concurrency models, and system behavior at scale Collaborate with architects and engineering teams to ensure quality is embedded in system design, including identifying bottlenecks across storage, query execution, and graph traversal layers Lead validation of system reliability and failure handling, including resilience, graceful degradation, and stability in distributed environments Create and evolve centralized testing frameworks and CI/CD integrations, ensuring continuous validation of data quality, system behavior, and performance at scale Create complex test data scenarios to validate replication, synchronization, and distributed data integrity Participate in defect management and communicate risks, including data inconsistencies, distributed system failures, and performance degradation, ensuring high confidence in the accuracy, reliability, and scalability of genealogical data and relationships Bachelor’s degree in related field or equivalent professional work experience Eight years of progressive relevant professional experience or significant internship Prior experience in a software engineer in test leadership role, leading a team (2+) through the first and subsequent releases of several (3+) successful products, and at least one of which must be a large-scale enterprise application Proven ability to architect automated testing system and subsystems Proven success in defining logic and algorithms to create automated test solutions and implementing them within the overall architecture Must have expert level skills in engineering/programming, analytical/diagnostic/troubleshooting, web technology, and programming methodology Excellent communication skills including the ability to create, communicate, and direct work toward accomplishing an overall technical vision Exceptional troubleshooter with the ability to solve problems in a timely manner under pressure Verifiable knowledge of the applicable technical systems and functions Proven success testing cloud-based applications in Continuous Integration/Continuous Delivery in a service-oriented architecture Strong skills in engineering/programming, analytical/diagnostic/troubleshooting, web technology, and programming methodology This job operates in a professional office environment To successfully perform the essential functions of the job there may be physical requirements which need to be met such as sitting for long periods of time and using computer monitors/equipment Preferred: Experience developing / testing complex, large-scale systems. Strong experience in the tools, methodologies, and technologies the role supports is preferred Three years of specialized experience in the technologies and methodologies of the product platform processes Experience in testing systems for scalability, fault tolerance, load, and other operational areas for a data center-based service is beneficial
