About The Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a Highways Steward to join our Network Management team in East Sussex.

In this role, you’ll take ownership of a defined geographic area, acting as a key point of contact for local councillors, parish representatives and residents. You’ll play a vital role in maintaining the safety and performance of the highway network through inspections, investigations and stakeholder engagement.

What you'll be doing

  • Carry out routine and reactive highway safety inspections, identifying defects and raising works orders
  • Undertake detailed inspections and determine appropriate remedial actions
  • Manage and respond to customer enquiries in line with policies and service standards
  • Investigate third-party claims relating to personal injury or property damage, ensuring robust documentation
  • Attend meetings with local councillors, residents and stakeholders, representing the business professionally
  • Support delivery across the wider Network Management service
  • Contribute to minimising third-party claims and supporting recovery processes
  • Help deliver contractual performance targets and service standards
  • Champion Health & Safety and Zero Harm across all activities

Who we're looking for

  • Experience in highways inspections, maintenance or operations
  • A working knowledge of highways maintenance standards and policies
  • Strong communication and customer service skills
  • Experience managing customer expectations in a professional manner
  • Confidence engaging with elected members and stakeholders
  • Good IT skills, including experience using works management systems
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage a varied workload
  • The ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Full UK driving licence
  • Ability to prioritise workload and meet deadlines
  • Flexible and adaptable approach to work
