Department of Computer Science, & DTC, Wolfson Building, Parks Road, Oxford.

HR Officer

Permanent upon successful completion of a one-year probationary period

Full time (36.5 hours per week)

Grade 5: £32,108 - £37,338 p.a., with a discretionary range to £40,514, inclusive of Oxford University weighting

Internal candidates will be given priority and must apply via the Employee Dashboard.

About The Role

The Department of Computer Science is looking for a proactive and organised HR Officer to join our evolving HR team and play an important role in delivering a high-quality HR service across the full employee lifecycle.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a busy HR environment, takes pride in getting things right, and is keen to develop their HR knowledge and experience.

You will work in close partnership with a Senior HR Officer, providing day-to-day operational HR support across a broad range of activities including recruitment and onboarding, contractual changes, payroll, casual workers, immigration administration and leavers.

You will take responsibility for progressing routine HR processes and activities, providing first-level advice to staff and managers, maintaining accurate records and ensuring actions are completed accurately and on time. You will work independently within established procedures, using initiative and sound judgement to resolve routine issues and recognising when matters are more complex and need to be escalated.

The role is part of a new full employee lifecycle approach to HR service delivery, designed around strong partnership, clear ownership and continuous improvement. You will have the opportunity to build broad HR experience, working closely with experienced HR colleagues and developing towards more complex HR responsibilities over time.

About You

You will have experience of working in an HR team or HR role and a good working understanding of HR policies and procedures. You will be comfortable dealing with routine HR queries, communicating clearly with staff and managers, and managing a varied workload with competing deadlines.

We are looking for someone who is proactive and confident working independently. You will notice what needs to be done, take ownership of your work, follow tasks through and use sound judgement to decide when to resolve something yourself and when to seek advice.

Accuracy and attention to detail are important, as is the ability to provide a professional and responsive service to colleagues and candidates. You should enjoy working collaboratively with colleagues while also being able to manage your own workload.

An interest in using digital tools and technology to improve processes and ways of working would be particularly welcome.

Experience within the University or higher education would be useful.

About Us

The University of Oxford is a stimulating work environment, which enjoys an international reputation as a world-class centre of excellence. Our research plays a key role in tackling many global challenges, from reducing our carbon emissions to developing vaccines during a pandemic.

  • A comprehensive range of childcare services
  • Family leave schemes
  • Cycle loan scheme
  • Discounted bus travel and Season Ticket travel loans
  • Membership to a variety of social and sports clubs

This role offers a flexibility of hybrid working with a mixture of on-site and remote working possible. The usual on-site presence for departmental staff is 3 days per week.

Diversity

Committed to equality and valuing diversity.

Application Process

You will be required to upload a supporting statement and an up-to-date CV as part of your online application.

Your supporting statement should clearly demonstrate how you meet each of the essential selection criteria listed in the job description. Applications that do not include a supporting statement and CV, or fail to address the criteria in sufficient detail, will not be considered.

While we recognise the value of AI tools in supporting application preparation, applications should reflect your own experience, achievements and understanding of the role.

Applications that appear generic or fail to demonstrate personal insight may not be progressed.

The closing date for applications is midday on 14th September 2026. Interviews are expected to be held in late September.
