Loki Fire is building a highly capable African industrial fire engineering team. We offer engineers the opportunity to work on technically demanding projects involving multidisciplinary design, EPCM integration and international project delivery.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a hands-on Industrial Fire Systems Design Engineer who can carry the day-to-day technical workload under the direction of our Lead Fire Engineer and registered Pr.Eng.
The successful candidate does not need to be professionally registered. However, they must produce calculations, designs, reports and technical documentation to a standard that can be efficiently reviewed, certified and issued by the Pr.Eng.
This is a delivery-focused position. We need someone who investigates, calculates, coordinates, documents and completes work—not someone who only attends meetings, reviews other people’s work or delegates responsibility.
The role is remote-first, with a weekly project meeting in Randburg and occasional travel to industrial and mining sites in South Africa and internationally.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
• Develop fire protection philosophies, design criteria and technical reports
• Conduct fire-risk reviews and translate findings into practical engineering solutions
• Calculate fire-water demand and system capacity requirements
• Assist with the design of fire-water tanks, pump systems, ring mains, hydrants and hose reels
• Design or coordinate sprinkler, deluge, water-spray, foam and specialist suppression systems
• Develop fire detection, alarm and cause-and-effect requirements in coordination with C&I specialists
• Prepare and review P&IDs, general arrangements, layouts, schematics and system interfaces
• Prepare equipment datasheets, technical specifications, bills of quantities and material take-offs
• Coordinate fire systems with piping, structural, mechanical, electrical, C&I and plant-layout disciplines
• Review 3D models for clashes, access, maintenance and constructability
• Evaluate vendor submissions and respond to technical queries
• Support procurement, FAT, SAT, construction, commissioning and project close-out
• Maintain proper control of calculations, assumptions, revisions and technical deliverables
• Coordinate directly with clients, EPCMs, suppliers and other engineering disciplines
• Take ownership of deadlines and drive assigned work through to completion
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Relevant engineering qualification in mechanical, fire, civil, piping or a closely related discipline
• Minimum five years’ practical experience in fire protection engineering or fire systems design
• Proven experience on mining, mineral processing, power, petrochemical, oil and gas or other industrial facilities
• Working knowledge of relevant NFPA, SANS, BS/EN or equivalent international fire protection standards
• Ability to prepare engineering calculations, specifications, reports and design documentation
• Practical understanding of fire-water reticulation, pumps, tanks, hydrants, sprinklers, deluge and suppression systems
• Ability to read and develop P&IDs, layouts, schematics and technical drawings
• Strong analytical, problem-solving and multidisciplinary coordination skills
• Strong written and spoken English
• High level of accuracy and disciplined document control
• Ability to work independently in a remote environment
• Reliable internet connection and suitable home-office facilities
• Valid passport and ability to travel internationally
• Ability to attend a bi Weekly or Monthly project meeting in Randburg
ADVANTAGEOUS EXPERIENCE ON
• Hydraulic calculation software
• AutoCAD, Revit, Plant 3D, Navisworks or similar platforms
• Conveyor and transformer fire protection
• Foam, gaseous suppression, water mist or specialist suppression systems
• Fire detection and cause-and-effect design
• EPCM project delivery and 3D model integration
• Procurement, FAT, SAT and commissioning support
• African mining and industrial projects
• ECSA registration as a Candidate Engineer, Technologist or Technician
