SLAC’s Facilities and Operations (F&O) Directorate manages one of the world’s premier science facilities on a 400-acre Stanford site with 150+ structures for the Department of Energy. We are a service organization committed to the support and success of the Laboratory's Scientific Mission by providing safe and responsive engineering, construction, operations and maintenance of equipment, buildings and infrastructure. The F&O Energy Management & Efficiency Program has a temporary employment opportunity available for a student or recent graduate who is a mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, or related engineering discipline and seeking to gain work experience. The intern will closely work with Program Manager implementing and documenting energy reduction and sustainability measures. Examples of Projects/ Opportunities : Document and track monthly utility consumption with the intent to identify abnormalities and inefficiencies. Create graphics to illustrate usage and trends for energy, water and emissions. Engage in building energy and water audits and create audit reports. Become familiar with standards and guidelines for sustainable building new construction to LEED standards Exercise creativity and experience to champion positive environmental conservation engagement activities and promotional material such news articles, posters and social Learn about Department of Energy (DOE) energy & water efficiency performance goals, and the working environment of a Federal contractor facility. Work closely with Stanford/SLAC scientific community and staff from many different disciplines. Note : This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible nonexempt student position (work less than 50% full-time equivalent), not to exceed 980 hours in a calendar year. Candidate is required to report in-person to SLAC on a part-time basis, typically twice-per-week for part-day, and hybrid work. This position requires working throughout the calendar year (not limited to summer). Hours are flexible and estimated to be an average of 12 hours per week. Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization. To be successful in this position : Must be currently enrolled or recently graduated from a mechanical engineering, environmental, sustainability sciences or related degree program. A passion for sustainability and environmental stewardship a plus. Basic data processing and analysis in Excel software. Create promotional material such as posters, flyers, pamphlets, websites, or other promotional material. Create clear and precise documentation in the English language. Strong oral communication skills in English. Self-motivated and able to work independently.
