Working Job Title : Macromolecular Crystallography Intern Job Code : 0901 Employment Duration : 6 months with the possibility of extension Hiring Department : SSRL SMB MC Account: 21574-A3810 Intern Level: I Position Overview: We are setting up a new laboratory for high-throughput structural biology for drug discovery. As part of the endeavor, we need to develop new protocols and automation for sample preparation, automated data collection and for the examination of experimental outcomes. This intern project will involve testing new holders, for growing protein crystals for structure determination and screening for compound-binding, programming fluid handling robots, manual analysis of crystallization outcomes, testing AI and new software for the analysis of crystallization outcomes, and diffraction data collection using the crystals developed. The project will also involve the development of new robotics for the removal of excess solutions around crystals, which will involve the 3D modeling of new parts, 3D printing parts, working with machinists to fabricate and assemble components, setting travel limits and alignment of motorized equipment, setting up camera systems to monitor robotics, writing simple software scripts to position the blotter and test its use with samples. Your specific responsibilities include: Testing related to setting up crystallization trials, mounting protein crystals, blotting crystals and viewing crystallization screening outcomes. 3D Modeling and assembling mechanical parts. 3D printing components. Note : This is an hourly, non-benefits eligible temporary-nonexempt student position (work at 50% full-time equivalent or more), not to exceed 980 hours in six consecutive months Eligible applicants must be at least 18 years of age, currently enrolled in an educational program or recently graduated, and have US work authorization. To be successful in this position you must have: Current enrollment in, or recent graduation from educational program in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, mechanical engineering, materials science, or a related scientific/technical field. Completed college-level coursework in biology, chemistry, engineering, or a related field. Basic laboratory skills and ability to follow established safety procedures and experimental protocols. Interest in structural biology, crystallography, laboratory automation, mechanical design, or scientific instrumentation. Ability to learn and apply technical concepts related to sample preparation, crystal handling, 3D modeling, 3D printing, and laboratory documentation. Strong attention to detail, organization, and ability to maintain accurate technical records. Effective written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work collaboratively in a multidisciplinary research environment. In addition, preferred requirements include: Technical knowledge of standard wet lab techniques. Experience in a R&D environment. Demonstrated experience with crystal mounting. Experience running the Solid Edge software and using 3D printers. Experience collecting X-ray diffraction data at a synchrotron. Demonstrated effective communication of technical issues with senior engineers, operators, tech support personnel, vendors, or others in a diverse multicultural environment.
