IT System administrator (remote unpaid collaboration)

We believe that communication and visual languages are important in this vision. We all use emojis, GIFs, and many other visual communication forms in our daily lives already. Our mission is to create the world's first fully functioning language based on visual icons and use it across all major social media channels.

We're a team of linguists, technologists, and designers passionate about the potential of making communication simple, direct, and impactful.

About us

We're a team of over 20 volunteers working across multiple disciplines, from linguistics to design, from business development and marketing to product development. We are open and respectful, and work remotely and mostly asynchronously. Accountability is key for us, and so is teamwork.

About you

Besides strong motivation, the ability to work independently, and writing clean and reusable code, we have listed some additional skills we seek. Not all of the skills are needed, but certainly encouraged. In addition to that, we expect an understanding of industry standards (VCS, agile approaches, etc.) and best practices.

System admin (eg, LAMP stack)

* Experience with system administration (Linux, LAMP stack)

* Knowledge of a standard open-source tool for monitoring (Munin)

* Understanding of typical system failures and how to fix them

* Knowledge about performance issues, security risks, and system management

* Knowledge of typical tools used in industry (GitLab, Kirby, MariaDB, shell, cron jobs)

The most important blockers we could currently use some help with are:

Concerning system administration:

Blocker:

- Gitlab issue debugging, probably due to version update to 13.5,3, and backup storage/retrieval

One-time actions:

- Clean-up and analysis of current usage of resources (it would be nice to have an overview and do a technical check-up)

Recurring actions:

- Server maintenance (restart processes, run updates, run health patches)

- Future: user administration, more documentation
