Role Description

This is a remote Japanese-English Medical Interpreter position at Multilingual Interpreters and Translators (MLT), part of Lingtopia Group.

The interpreter will provide real-time, accurate interpretation between Japanese and English for patients, families, and healthcare professionals through phone and video platforms. Daily responsibilities include interpreting medical consultations, appointments, assessments, and other healthcare-related conversations while ensuring that diagnoses, treatment plans, medical terminology, and consent information are communicated accurately, completely, and impartially.

The role also involves managing multiple interpretation sessions, maintaining professionalism and confidentiality, adhering to HIPAA and organizational standards, and supporting effective communication that improves patient care and healthcare outcomes.

Responsibilities

• Provide accurate, consecutive interpretation between Japanese and English during healthcare-related interactions.
• Facilitate effective communication between patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
• Interpret medical terminology, diagnoses, treatment plans, prescriptions, and consent information accurately.
• Maintain strict confidentiality and comply with HIPAA and organizational policies.
• Follow professional interpreting standards while remaining neutral and impartial.
• Handle multiple interpretation sessions efficiently through phone and video platforms.
• Complete required documentation and maintain accurate session records when applicable.
• Participate in training, quality assurance, and continuous professional development activities.

Qualifications

• Native or near-native Japanese fluency.
• C1+ English proficiency.
• Excellent verbal communication and active listening skills.
• Strong attention to detail and the ability to interpret accurately in real time.
• Professional, respectful, and patient-focused communication style.
• Reliable high-speed internet connection and a quiet workspace suitable for remote work.
• Comfortable using computers, headsets, video conferencing platforms, and remote interpretation software.
• Previous medical interpreting experience is preferred but not required.
• Customer service, call center, healthcare, or communication-related experience is considered an advantage.
• High school diploma or equivalent required; interpreter training or certification is a plus.
