Is this job info correct?

We are looking for a Junior Network & IT Support Technician to join our IT team. This role would suit someone at the beginning of their IT career, who has an interest in networking, infrastructure and cybersecurity. We are not looking for someone who already knows everything. We are looking for someone who understands the basics, enjoys investigating problems, asks sensible questions and is willing to learn. You will help support and maintain the organisation's network and IT infrastructure while developing your technical knowledge alongside experienced members of the IT team. A strong security mindset is important. We want someone who thinks about how and why something works, rather than simply making a problem disappear. This role can be based from on a hybrid basis either our Prestwick or Telford office, and we are open to candidates who are able to work from either location. Key Responsibilities Assist with the day-to-day support and maintenance of network infrastructure. Troubleshoot basic network connectivity issues across wired and wireless networks. Help investigate network faults, performance issues and unusual behaviour. Support switches, wireless access points, firewalls and other network equipment under guidance. Assist with VLANs, IP addressing, DHCP, DNS and other core networking services. Help identify devices connected to the network and investigate unknown or unexpected devices. Support network cabling, patching, ports and physical network equipment. Assist with monitoring network availability, performance and security. Help investigate security alerts and suspicious network activity. Follow IT and cybersecurity procedures when making changes or troubleshooting systems. Escalate issues when appropriate rather than making risky changes without understanding the impact. Maintain clear documentation of network devices, configurations, troubleshooting and fixes. Help keep network diagrams and infrastructure documentation accurate and up to date. Support general IT requests where required and work with other members of the IT team. Assist with the deployment and configuration of new network equipment. Take part in IT infrastructure and cybersecurity improvement projects. Research unfamiliar problems and technologies and work through them methodically. Help identify opportunities to improve, standardise or automate IT and network processes. Skills, Knowledge & Expertise You do not need extensive commercial experience for this role. More important to us is your attitude and how you approach problems. You should: Have a basic understanding of computer networking. Understand concepts such as IP addresses, subnets, gateways, DNS and DHCP. Have an interest in networking, infrastructure or cybersecurity. Enjoy troubleshooting and investigating technical problems. Be willing to research something when you do not immediately know the answer. Be comfortable asking for help when required. Care about doing things securely rather than taking shortcuts. Be able to communicate clearly with both technical and non-technical people. Be helpful and patient when supporting users. Be able to document what you have done and explain how an issue was resolved. Have good attention to detail. Be willing to learn new technologies and develop your technical knowledge. Desirable Knowledge The following would be useful but are not essential: Basic understanding of TCP/IP. VLANs and network segmentation. Wi-Fi troubleshooting. Network switches and access points. Firewalls. VPNs. Microsoft 365 or Entra ID. Windows administration. Linux. PowerShell or another scripting language. Network monitoring tools. Cybersecurity fundamentals. CompTIA Network+, Security+, Cisco CCST or CCNA study. Home labs, personal projects, Raspberry Pi projects, Hack The Box, TryHackMe, networking labs or other self-directed learning are also valuable. Commercial experience is not required. The Kind of Person We Want Someone who sees a problem and wants to understand why it happened, not just how to make the error message disappear. You might not know the answer immediately, but you should be comfortable investigating, testing, researching and asking questions until you understand the problem. Security should be part of your thinking from the start. If something seems unusual, insecure or simply does not make sense, we want you to question it. You should also remember that IT exists to support people. Technical knowledge matters, but being approachable, helpful and able to explain things clearly is equally important. Development This role is intended to develop over time. You will be given opportunities to build experience across: Networking Cybersecurity Infrastructure Cloud services Network monitoring Automation and scripting IT troubleshooting Security investigations The longer-term aim would be for the successful candidate to develop towards a Network Technician, Network Engineer or Network Security role as their knowledge and experience grows.
