Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person. Work primarily takes place at Enterprise Square, Edmonton. The Online Learning & Continuing Education (OCE) is seeking a Learning Experience Developer to join its Continuing Education team. The Learning Experience Developer creates engaging, accessible, and innovative online learning experiences for Continuing Education at the University of Alberta. Reporting to the Manager, Continuing Education Curriculum Strategy and Quality, the position works closely with the Instructional Designer and collaborates with academic leads, instructors, subject matter experts, and project teams throughout the course development lifecycle. The position develops high-quality non-credit courses and digital learning assets, applying best practices in online and adult learning, accessibility, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Indigenous Initiatives, and Access, Community and Belonging (ACB). The role is responsible for course development within learning management systems and course authoring tools, multimedia production, interactive learning activities, assessment integration, and quality assurance. Digital Course Production Develop and maintain engaging online courses using learning management systems such as Canvas and course authoring tools such as Articulate Rise and Storyline. Apply online and adult learning principles to create purposeful, learner-centred digital experiences. Collaborate with Instructional Designers, academic leads, instructors, and subject matter experts to translate content into effective online learning experiences. Develop interactive activities, branching scenarios, gamification, multimedia, and other learning elements that enhance engagement. Produce prototypes, draft and final courses, incorporating feedback through to launch. Apply Indigenous Initiatives and ACB principles throughout the design and development process. Multimedia, Enrichment, and Assessment Design and produce multimedia and digital learning assets, including presentations, podcasts, video, animation, graphics, and interactive learning objects. Curate, adapt, and provide light post-production editing of existing digital content. Develop interactive learning activities and assessments in collaboration with Instructional Designers and subject matter experts. Configure quizzes, polls, discussion forums, peer review activities, gradebooks, rubrics, and other LMS tools. Ensure digital assets and learning experiences meet accessibility, UDL, and digital LX/UX standards. Organize and maintain digital course content to support version control and reuse. Quality Assurance Conduct quality assurance and user acceptance testing throughout the course development lifecycle. Review courses for functionality, accessibility, usability, responsiveness, consistency, and technical quality. Identify, document, troubleshoot, and resolve technical issues and accessibility barriers, escalating where required. Manage QA issues and collaborate with project team members to ensure timely resolution. Maintain course versions, learning objects, archives, and supporting documentation. Work Environment Collaborate with internal partners, including Information Services and Technology and the Centre for Teaching and Learning, on learning technologies and digital learning resources. Work collaboratively with project teams using project management, scheduling, and communication tools. Communicate development status, issues, risks, and timelines to project team members. Share knowledge and best practices with colleagues to strengthen course development processes. Champion the learner and end-user experience and contribute to continuous improvement and innovation in digital learning. Professional Development Research, evaluate, and test emerging technologies, tools, and practices in online teaching and learning. Participate in professional development activities, conferences, communities of practice, working groups, and professional associations. Share innovative practices and project outcomes with internal and external audiences. Education Undergraduate degree in educational technology, instructional design, educational design, adult education, or a related field. A diploma combined with strong online course development and multimedia experience may be considered. Experience Minimum two years of experience developing online courses and multimedia. Experience developing digital learning experiences using LMS platforms and course authoring tools. Experience creating multimedia and interactive digital learning assets. Experience applying accessibility, UDL, and digital learning experience/user experience principles. Experience with quality assurance, user acceptance testing, and troubleshooting online learning environments. Knowledge and Skills Advanced skills with digital learning and multimedia tools, including Articulate Suite and Adobe Suite. Knowledge of web, graphic design, multimedia development, and relevant technologies such as HTML and CSS. Strong understanding of online learning, adult learning, accessibility, UDL, and digital LX/UX. Knowledge of copyright, Creative Commons licensing, intellectual property, and the use of digital content in educational settings. Strong attention to detail and ability to identify technical, usability, and accessibility issues. Creativity and ability to translate learning objectives and content into engaging digital experiences. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective relationships and positively influence project partners.
