We are hiring a Marine Risk Engineer who will provide advanced technical risk assessment and consulting services for marine and transportation-related exposures. This role supports underwriting and client risk management strategies through detailed risk evaluations of cargo, logistics operations, warehousing, ports and terminals, marine transportation networks, and supply chain risks. The Marine Risk Engineer will act as a trusted technical advisor to underwriting teams and clients, helping identify risk improvement opportunities and supporting strategic account management. This description aligns with HDI's Marine underwriting and Risk Consulting functions. Key Responsibilities: Perform comprehensive on-site and virtual marine risk assessments, including evaluations of logistics operations, warehousing facilities, ports and terminals, cargo handling practices, transportation networks, and supply chain exposures. Generate detailed, high-quality marine risk engineering reports in a timely manner to document exposures, evaluate risk quality, and provide actionable recommendations using proprietary tools and systems. Collaborate closely with marine underwriting teams to assess risk quality, analyze cargo and transportation exposures on new and renewal business, and support informed underwriting decisions and preferred risk selection. Deliver advanced risk engineering consultation to customers, including cargo loss prevention strategies, supply chain risk management, warehouse and storage assessments, catastrophe exposure analysis, and transportation risk mitigation recommendations. Support the management of complex and multinational marine accounts by providing account-level engineering services aligned with underwriting objectives and client risk management strategies. Build and maintain strong client relationships by serving as a trusted advisor and helping clients implement proactive risk management, cargo protection, loss prevention, and operational resilience practices. Evaluate exposure accumulations involving warehouses, stock throughput programs, ports, terminals, and international transit routes, providing technical insight into risk quality and potential loss scenarios. Provide technical insight on emerging marine, logistics, and supply chain risks, as well as industry loss trends and best practices, to enhance risk evaluation methodologies and underwriting performance. risk consulting colleagues, and external specialists to support large and specialized marine accounts. Mentor and support less experienced risk engineers when appropriate, sharing technical knowledge and contributing to the development of team expertise. Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor's degree or higher in Engineering, Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Transportation, Logistics, or a related technical discipline. 5+ years of experience in Marine Risk Engineering, Marine Surveying, Marine Insurance, Transportation Risk Management, Logistics Operations, or a related technical field. Strong technical understanding of marine insurance risk evaluation, cargo transportation, warehousing operations, port and terminal risks, stock throughput exposures, and global supply chain operations. Experience conducting risk assessments, operational reviews, cargo surveys, or loss prevention evaluations for marine, transportation, or logistics-related risks. Proven ability to collaborate with underwriting teams and provide strategic risk insights that support underwriting decisions and portfolio management. Strong analytical, communication, and client relationship management skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences. Knowledge of marine cargo handling, warehousing standards, supply chain resilience, catastrophe exposures, and transportation risk management preferred. Experience supporting multinational clients and global insurance programs is highly desirable. Professional certifications such as AMIM, ARM, CPCU, Certified Marine Surveyor, or other relevant industry credentials are preferred. Proficient computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office products). Ability to travel (up to 30%) for client site visits, cargo inspections, and risk assessments. Compensation and Benefits: Base salary range for this position is $120,000–$150,000 plus eligibility for a performance-based annual bonus. Actual compensation will be based on experience, education, and geographic location.
