Positions at Spencer Hospital are not affiliated with Avera; however, we collaborate to provide services to the communities we serve. Employment offers, if accepted, are exclusively with Spencer Hospital. Responsibilities: Assigns codes to diagnosis and procedures for inpatient and outpatient medical records using ICD-10 and CPT 4 coding classification systems. Coding assignments are made for the purposes of reimbursement, research, compliance with federal and state regulations/guidelines and for severity of illness. Adheres to regulatory requirements, is ethical in assignment of codes and meets continuing education requirements. Complete continuing educations requirements for maintenance of credential(s) and departmental Coding Compliance Plan. Monitors the status of coding backlog and unbilled accounts receivable. Flexible in moving to various assignments to maximize section efficiency and reduce A/R. Interacts with Patient Accounts and Physician Office staff on billing related issues with particular attention to regulatory requirements and ethics. Enter necessary charges. Assigns E & M code assignments for Emergency, Hospitalist, Wound Care and Behavioral Health physician/provider for billing purposes. Routes questionable E & M coding cases to physician representative for clarification. Assigns codes for specialty areas such as clinics, oncology etc, which are accurate and meet special regulatory requirements. Assigns codes for interim billing purposes (RCA). Conduct quality review audits Assigns appropriate status on surgical patients Validates abstracted data against the medical record and enters additional data elements as appropriate. Utilizes critical thinking while completing the abstract for recognition of data elements requiring follow-up. Engages in caring and professional communication. Requirements: Associate degree in Health Information/Medical Record Technology (RHIT or eligible) or Bachelors degree in Health Information/Registered Health Information Administration (RHIA or eligible); and/or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS); and/or Associate degree of Applied Science in Medical Secretary Program preferred. Hospital or clinic coding experience preferred. Experience with EPIC preferred. Position has the ability to be remote; must adhere to Spencer Hospital's Home Employment Policy.
