Mentor for Young People (online) - Volunteer

BrightPaths Support CIC

Is this job info correct?
Be a steady adult for young people aged 11–18 who have fallen between services. Support 2–3 young people each week through short, consistent online sessions. Relational, non-clinical work with training, supervision, and strong support. Lived experience welcomed.

What difference will you make?

Your role offers something different — a consistent, low-pressure space with someone outside of home and school.

Many of the young people we support already have caring adults around them. What they often need is a space to talk freely, feel understood, and be met by someone who has the time, perspective, or shared experience to truly get it.

Through consistent, relational support over time, you’ll help young people feel more understood, more confident, and more able to make sense of what’s going on for them.

Your time also allows us to reach more families, offering support that is personal, steady, and grounded in real connection.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for people who are warm, steady, and able to really listen. This role works best for someone who can sit alongside a young person without rushing to fix things or find solutions.

You’ll need to be reliable and able to show up consistently each week, as you’ll be supporting a small number of young people and building relationships with them over time. You should feel comfortable with online 1 1 work and basic video calls, and be open to following a clear, non-clinical approach. We’ll guide you on how we do this.

Most of our volunteers have some experience in areas like mentoring, youth work, education, social care, or similar roles. This can also include relevant lived or informal experience.

Lived experience is genuinely valued here — not as something you need to share, but as something that shapes how you listen and relate. This might include your own or your family’s experience of neurodivergence, mental health, or feeling missed or misunderstood growing up.

Above all, we’re looking for people who care deeply, can hold boundaries, and want to show up in a consistent, grounded way for young people.

If this sounds like you, we’d love to hear from you.

Remote

What will you be doing?

You’ll be a steady, trusted adult for a small number of young people, running regular online 1 1 sessions each week (around 45 minutes per session).

This is a structured, contained role with a small number of young people and a clear weekly rhythm, designed to feel manageable and well supported.

This is not about “fixing”. It’s about listening, building trust, and helping young people feel understood and less alone.

You don’t need to have all the answers. You just need to show up in a way that feels steady and real.

You will

  • Run 2–3 short online sessions each week, with the same young people over time
  • Build safe, consistent relationships at each young person’s pace
  • Use our simple session structure as a guide, while staying led by what they need that day
  • Notice patterns and gently reflect these over time
  • Keep short, structured session notes
  • Follow safeguarding guidance and share any concerns promptly
  • Take part in supervision and reflective group sessions

You’ll be supported throughout, with clear guidance, training, and a team around you.
