Messaging Platform Engineer – Operations, Kubernetes & NATS Join our journey! Feel the freedom, adventure, and excitement of driving innovation. You'll be part of a great team and make a real impact on future mobility by accelerating digital transformation We are looking for an experienced platform, DevOps, or operations engineer to help build and run the messaging capabilities of Drive, WirelessCar's Internal Developer Platform. This is a hands-on role for someone who has proven experience operating production systems and working with Kubernetes. You do not need to be a NATS expert on day one, but you should be excited to learn it deeply and apply your operational experience to an important platform capability. About WirelessCar WirelessCar empowers the future of mobility by connecting vehicles and delivering cutting-edge digital services. Founded in 1999 and headquartered in Sweden, we have a strong global presence with offices in the U.S., China, Germany, India, and Japan, offering a truly global workplace with exciting opportunities for career growth. Owned by Volkswagen Group, today we connect over 17 million vehicles across 100+ countries and partner with leading OEMs, including Volvo, Jaguar Land Rover, Volkswagen Group, Nissan, and Subaru. About the Role Drive is WirelessCar's platform for turning ideas into running customer solutions. It gives development teams a consistent way to build, deploy, and operate software, while reducing the operational effort needed to get from an idea to production. Drive is built on open-source, cloud-native technology, with Kubernetes at its core. It brings together NATS for messaging, Argo CD and Kargo for GitOps delivery, OpenTelemetry for end-to-end observability, and Gateway API with Cilium Service Mesh for modern networking. WirelessCar is putting real trust in Drive as a central part of how we deliver value to customers. You will help evolve this modern, cutting-edge architecture while making sure it remains reliable, observable, and practical to operate. Messengers is a cross-functional platform engineering team focused on messaging and shaping the future of Drive. We work close to the developers who use the platform, influence architecture, and see our impact directly in production. The team thrives on collaboration, shared ownership, and continuous learning. We collaborate closely to align on goals and build shared understanding, working together or independently as the task requires. Your Impact As part of team Messengers, you will: Operate and scale NATS clusters: monitor, tune, troubleshoot, and improve production messaging infrastructure; take part in incident response and capacity planning Improve observability and operational excellence: build dashboards, alerts, metrics, logs, and traces that make the platform understandable and help teams diagnose messaging issues Improve reliability: identify failure modes, strengthen resilience, and continuously improve clustering topology and operational practices Create actionable documentation: provide clear examples, runnable code, and troubleshooting guides that help developers use and operate messaging safely Build developer tooling: create CLIs, APIs, or Kubernetes operators that let teams provision messaging resources through self-service tooling Work across boundaries: collaborate with developers, platform engineers, and architects to turn operational findings into practical platform improvements What We're Looking For We’re looking for an experienced engineer who can bring a strong level of expertise to the role, including: Proven production operations experience: you have operated live systems and have practical experience with monitoring, alerting, troubleshooting, incident response, and post-mortems Strong hands-on Kubernetes experience: you can operate and troubleshoot workloads and deployments using tools such as kubectl, k9s, and Argo CD A systems mindset: you can reason from evidence about failures, performance degradation, network problems, and message-processing bottlenecks Clear communication: you explain technical issues clearly, share knowledge, and work constructively with people across different roles and levels of experience A collaborative and pragmatic personality: you enjoy solving problems with others, making trade-offs, and taking ownership from investigation through production The drive to learn NATS: you are interested in developing deep knowledge of clustering, JetStream, subject hierarchies, security models, and messaging patterns Experience with NATS or another messaging system is valuable, but strong operations and Kubernetes experience is the foundation for this role. Experience with comparable orchestration, deployment, or observability tools is relevant, but you should be comfortable learning and working hands-on with Kubernetes. It would be a plus if you have Hands-on experience designing and operating messaging systems or other high-throughput distributed systems Experience with observability tools such as Prometheus, Grafana, or OpenTelemetry Experience with Helm charts and Kubernetes CRDs Experience writing Go, or an interest in learning high-quality, idiomatic Go Experience with GitOps tools such as Argo CD, Flux, or Kargo Experience building or contributing to open source (we maintain NAuth , a Kubernetes Operator that enables GitOps of NATS AuthN/Z configuration) An interest in or experience using AI agents for development If you want to write about your work or speak at conferences, we'll support you. Why WirelessCar? At WirelessCar, you’ll have the trust and freedom to take ownership, share ideas and make an impact.
