Fortum, Teollisuuden Voima, Vattenfall and Uniper are launching the fourth Nordic Nuclear Trainee Program (NNTP), a joint initiative for future nuclear professionals. The Nordic Nuclear Trainee Program offers a unique opportunity to deepen your understanding of the nuclear industry while building valuable connections across the Nordic nuclear sector. You'll connect with experienced professionals, build a strong network, and gain first-hand insight into the role nuclear energy plays in the energy transition. At the same time, you'll gain hands-on experience in your role as Design Engineer, Nuclear Safety at Fortum and develop skills that will support your future career in the industry. The program begins in January 2027 and runs until December 2027. NNTP is a paid trainee program. During the program, you will be employed by Fortum in a fixed-term position as Design Engineer, Nuclear Safety and participate in trainee activities alongside your daily work. Program details: A one-year trainee experience designed to support your professional development and strengthen your understanding of the nuclear industry Approximately 450 hours of dedicated program activities Six in-person modules (three days each), including site visits to nuclear facilities across the Nordics Four virtual seminars covering key topics in the nuclear sector A rotation assignment (2-4 weeks) A project assignment addressing a real industry challenge Mentoring from experienced nuclear industry professionals A visit to the WANO Paris Centre (World Association of Nuclear Operators) Networking opportunities with nuclear professionals and fellow trainees from across the Nordic nuclear industry Read more about the program here . About your role at Fortum : Are you ready to be part of a dynamic team dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient operation of nuclear power plants? We are looking for a Design Engineer to join our Nuclear Safety team within the Engineering & Projects (E&P) business area in Espoo, Finland. This is a fixed-term position starting in November-December 2026 and continuing until December 2027. As a Design Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in shaping the future of nuclear energy. In this role you will collaborate with a diverse group of experts to support Fortum’s internal preparatory work for possible nuclear newbuild, external nuclear customers, and co-owned units. The Nuclear Safety team has a wide range of different competencies which are utilized in supporting safe and efficient operations of our nuclear units, external nuclear customers, and the development of new nuclear and nuclear R&D activities in Fortum. You will work closely together with our other nuclear experts and with our external partners in creating winning solutions for the needs of our customers both in Finland and abroad. Your assignments may include e.g.: Functional safety analyses for Loviisa NPP or external customers Emergency operation procedure (EOP) development Safety and seismic classification studies and reports Nuclear newbuild projects: evaluation of plant concepts, dialogue with regulators and writing licensing documentation Owner’s engineering – supporting utilities in new build projects Evaluate and develop severe accident management concepts for Loviisa and new nuclear projects What we are looking for To be successful in this role, you bring: A university degree in Engineering (e.g. energy engineering), Energy Technology or Physics, and a couple of years of relevant working experience A good command of English, both written and spoken; Finnish and/or Swedish are considered an advantage Familiarity with nuclear safety principles or other regulated environments, combined with a questioning attitude and strong safety mindset Knowledge of power plant technology, operation and maintenance, or construction is considered an advantage A systematic and goal-oriented way of working, with strong problem-solving skills and a high level of responsibility We offer you In addition to the learning opportunities offered through NNTP, you will have a chance to start working as part of the nuclear expert community.
