📍 Fully Remote | 🕐 Full Time (5 days/week) | ⏱ 3-Month Contract (extension possible) | 💰 Day Rate — R1,500

Hi, I'm Harry from Phoenix Environmental & Phoenix Pet Cremations — two UK-based businesses that use bespoke Laravel-built systems to run our day-to-day operations.

We're looking for an experienced mid-level PHP Laravel developer based in South Africa to join us on a 3-month contract, fully remote. This is an initial 3-month contract with the very real possibility of extension for the right person. If you're good at what you do, take pride in your work, and are looking for a long-term relationship rather than just a quick contract — we'd love to hear from you. This is something we're very open to discussing nearer the time and we see this as the start of something longer for the right candidate

🔧 WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING

We have multiple live Laravel systems that need an experienced pair of hands to audit, stabilise, and improve. The codebase was built by a junior developer and needs someone who knows what good looks like.

• Audit and review our existing Laravel codebase

• Identify and fix bugs, security issues, and performance problems

• Refactor and clean up inconsistent or poorly written code

• Write clear documentation as you go

• Leave everything stable, structured, and ready for the future

✅ WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

• 3–5 years of commercial PHP / Laravel experience

• Experience working with inherited or legacy codebases

• Strong debugging and problem-solving ability

• Great communication — you'll work directly with me, the business owner

• Able to explain technical issues in plain English

• Strong Git / GitHub discipline

• UK time zone overlap (GMT+2 works perfectly)

📊 HOW WE TRACK PROGRESS

We've learned from past experience. No micromanagement — but we do ask for:

• Daily GitHub commits with clear descriptive messages

• Shared GitHub project board so we both know what's happening

• Short weekly written progress update

• Daily 30-minute video call

• Week 1 is a paid trial for both sides — if it's not the right fit, we part ways professionally

💷 PAY & TERMS

• Day rate open to negotiation based on experience

• Paid weekly — no waiting around

• Freelance contract (IR35 does not apply for overseas contractors)

• International payment via Wise or bank transfer
