Job Title: Substation Engineer Job Description The Substation Engineer will prepare and deliver complete engineering design packages for transmission and distribution substation projects. This role focuses on both physical and electrical design, including the development and review of detailed drawings and calculations, coordination with multidisciplinary teams, and support of project scopes, schedules, and cost estimates. The engineer will work independently on complex design activities while providing technical guidance to junior engineers and designers in a highly collaborative, remote environment. Responsibilities Prepare comprehensive engineering design packages for substation projects, ensuring accuracy, completeness, and compliance with applicable standards. Develop and review one-line diagrams, electrical arrangements, plan and section drawings, grounding layouts, conduit and cable routing drawings, and equipment layouts. Provide foundation loading information and other structural-related data required for substation equipment installations. Support both physical and electrical design activities for transmission and distribution substations throughout the project lifecycle. Coordinate design interfaces with civil, structural, protection and control, SCADA, and transmission line teams to ensure cohesive and integrated project designs. Assist in equipment selection and the development of technical specifications and material requisitions for substation components. Perform engineering calculations and studies, including grounding analysis, lightning protection studies, battery sizing calculations, AC/DC station service sizing, voltage drop analysis, equipment loading evaluations, bus and conductor sizing, equipment replacement assessments, and fault current and equipment duty evaluations. Develop project scopes, schedules, and engineering cost estimates, and contribute to planning and budgeting activities. Coordinate regularly with project managers, construction teams, and clients to support project execution and address technical issues. Participate in design review meetings and technical discussions, presenting engineering concepts and solutions clearly and professionally. Provide technical support, mentorship, and guidance to junior-level engineers and designers to promote knowledge sharing and team development. Work independently on design activities and prepare high-quality engineering deliverables for substation projects. Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced environment. Essential Skills Bachelor’s degree in engineering, with electrical engineering strongly preferred. Minimum of 5 years of physical substation engineering experience. Strong experience in substation engineering, including physical and electrical design for transmission and distribution substations. Ability to work independently on substation design activities and prepare complete engineering deliverables. Knowledge of IEEE standards, ANSI standards, NEC, and NESC applicable to substation design and operation. Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, specifications, and technical documentation. Proficiency in the Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and related tools used for engineering documentation and analysis. Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with internal teams and external stakeholders. Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and prioritize work to meet schedule and quality requirements. Additional Skills & Qualifications Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred. Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred. Experience participating in design review meetings and technical discussions for power delivery projects. Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, including civil, structural, protection and control, SCADA, and transmission line engineering groups. Demonstrated ability to provide technical support and guidance to junior engineers and designers. Familiarity with collaborative tools such as Microsoft Teams for remote engineering and project coordination. Work Environment This role is based in a remote work environment, offering flexibility while supporting a highly collaborative substation engineering group. The team consists of more than 80 engineers and designers who work closely together using Microsoft Teams and other digital collaboration technologies. The culture emphasizes teamwork, knowledge sharing, and ongoing growth within a rapidly expanding power delivery organization that is gaining new clients across the country. Work is performed primarily in a home office setting, using standard computer and software tools to develop designs, participate in virtual meetings, and coordinate with project teams. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Homestead, PA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $52.00 - $60.00/hr.
