Job Description - Planning Technician I (55795) Job Description Planning Technician I Job Number : 55795 Are you a tech-savvy planning professional passionate about shaping vibrant, inclusive open spaces in Edmonton? The City of Edmonton is seeking a Planning Technician I to join our Urban Growth and Open Space team in a key technical support role. Funded through the federal CMHC Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF), this position plays a direct role in advancing our "Co-locating on Community-based Assets - Redevelopment Framework" initiative. You will conduct spatial analysis, craft site plans, evaluate development constraints, and manage critical data to assess redevelopment potential across community spaces. Operating within dynamic project timelines, your work will help directly translate technical findings into clear, accessible visual aids for collaborative engagement sessions. Conduct mapping, spatial analysis, and data collection using GIS and AutoCAD to evaluate site parameters and draft preliminary site test fits Assist in evaluating site barriers, cataloging technical constraints, and compiling findings into accessible formats for planners, architects, and engineers Provide administrative, logistical, and technical support for engagement sessions with internal team members, community league representatives, housing providers, and external partners Prepare clear technical presentation materials, visual aids, and information summaries to support collaborative discussions Consolidate feedback, manage data from site reviews, and maintain organized files and records Assist the project management team in tracking key milestones and converting technical files to ensure smooth cross-departmental coordination Provide technical and drafting support for broader Open Space and Parks initiatives as needed to support ongoing municipal service delivery Qualifications : Completion of a two (2) year diploma in Urban Planning Technology, Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Architectural Technology, or a related field from a recognized institute of technology A minimum of two (2) years of directly related experience in planning support, spatial analysis/mapping, or a related technical environment Assets: Experience working within a municipal planning context or public sector environment Demonstrated familiarity with federally funded housing or redevelopment initiatives (such as CMHC HAF) Experience preparing visual communication materials for non-technical engagement participants Skills required for success: Strong knowledge of design, drafting, and mapping principles, with hands-on proficiency in software applications such as Microstation, AutoCAD, or GIS Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a proven ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear visual materials Outstanding organizational and time management skills, with the ability to maintain accuracy under compressed project deadlines Strong collaborative mindset and a client-service focus when building working relationships across multidisciplinary teams and external partners Alignment to our Cultural Commitments and Leadership Competencies ( https://bit.ly/4brRrXm ) Embracing a culture of equity, diversity, reconciliation and inclusion Conditions of Employment: Applicants may be tested Work Environment: Note: This position ​may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement ​with ​the flexibility to work from both home and the worksite as per the Letter of Understanding between the City of Edmonton and Civic Service Union 52 The weekly hours of work for this position are currently under review and may change at a future time.
