Job Title: Product Certification Field Technician Job Description The Product Certification Field Technician performs surveillance inspections of certified products and manufacturing facilities, ensuring compliance with established certification documents and quality standards. This role is part-time at approximately 20 hours per week, with the majority of work completed remotely from home, including preparing site visits, documenting findings, and planning inspection requirements. The technician supports a territory of multiple clients, visiting each facility twice per year, creating their own schedule, and serving as a key liaison between client facilities and the certification organization. Responsibilities Plan and conduct surveillance inspections in accordance with scheduling requirements and established procedures. Prepare for site visits remotely by reviewing certification documents, inspection requirements, and previous reports. Document manufacturer production and quality processes, including required production tests, test methods, equipment used, and calibration practices. Review certified products, sub-assemblies, and components to confirm compliance with relevant Certification Documents. Evaluate label inventory and label control processes to ensure proper use and traceability of certification marks. Review non-compliances issued during previous inspections, document any unresolved issues, and follow up on corrective actions. Select samples for evaluation and testing as directed by certification protocols. Document all compliance and non-compliance findings during inspections in a clear and detailed manner. Advise clients on appropriate resolutions and corrective actions to address non-compliance issues. Complete and submit Follow-up Service Inspection Reports for each client inspected, ensuring accuracy and timeliness. Communicate inspection results, technical information, and scheduling details between facility representatives and company personnel. Manage workload independently, including planning weekly schedules, prioritizing inspections, and organizing documentation. Maintain expenses within established guidelines while using personal vehicle for travel and tracking mileage for reimbursement. Use measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers, and interpret blueprints when needed to verify product specifications. Apply quality assurance, quality control, and troubleshooting skills to identify issues in manufacturing and product certification processes. Utilize smart technology, including tablets, PDF documentation tools, and communication platforms such as Microsoft Teams and Zoom, to perform remote work and reporting. Provide professional customer service, communicating effectively via email, phone, video calls, and in-person meetings with clients. Support approximately 60 customers in the territory by conducting inspections twice per year and maintaining ongoing communication. Essential Skills 5–10+ years of experience in product inspection and quality assurance. Experience in manufacturing environments, including exposure to production and quality systems. Strong documentation skills with the ability to write clear, detailed inspection and follow-up reports. Excellent customer communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings and compliance requirements. Proven ability to manage workload independently and plan weekly schedules without close supervision. Proficiency with computers and tablets, including handling PDF documentation and using smart technology such as iPad devices. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and related software for remote communication and documentation. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout the assigned territory, including driving long distances when needed. Access to reliable internet and strong computer skills to support remote work and documentation. Practical skills in quality assurance, quality inspection, and quality control in a technical or manufacturing context. Ability to perform product inspections and compliance auditing in line with certification requirements. Troubleshooting skills to identify and resolve issues related to product compliance and manufacturing processes. Comfort using measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers and interpreting construction drawings or blueprints. Knowledge of product certification processes and quality systems management. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate degree in Electronics or Systems Technologies is preferred. Bachelor’s degree in Engineering Technology is a plus. Experience with electrical training, technical inspection, and inspection of construction or manufactured products. Familiarity with product certification programs and electrical testing laboratories is beneficial. Strong email, phone, and in-person communication skills when interacting with customers and internal teams. High level of self-accountability, with the ability to plan weekly work schedules and manage multiple client commitments. Comfort working with smart technology tools, including tablets and online meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams. Background in manufacturing, construction, or technical inspection environments is advantageous. Experience with quality systems management and compliance auditing in regulated industries. Work Environment This role operates in a highly flexible, primarily remote work environment. The technician works from home for a substantial portion of the time, focusing on preparing inspections, reviewing documentation, and completing reports. Field work involves visiting client job-sites and manufacturing facilities within approximately a 90-mile radius, with most travel being local to a specific market. Occasional overnight stays or multi-hour drives may be required based on client locations. A typical full-time equivalent schedule is Monday through Friday, around 40 hours per week, but this part-time position is approximately 20 hours per week and allows the technician to create their own schedule and work their own hours. The role uses a company-provided tablet and tools, while the technician drives their own vehicle and receives mileage reimbursement at a national rate, with windshield time paid. The work environment combines home-based office tasks with on-site inspections in manufacturing or construction settings, requiring the use of measurement instruments, electronic devices, and digital communication platforms. The culture emphasizes flexibility, autonomy, and professional interaction with clients across many different industries and product lines.
