Job Title: Product Certification Field Technician Job Description The Product Certification Field Technician plays a key role in planning and conducting surveillance inspections to ensure products and manufacturing processes comply with certification requirements. Based in Massachusetts and working approximately 20 hours per week, you will spend the majority of your time remotely preparing visits, documenting findings, and planning inspection requirements. This role combines on-site inspections with detailed documentation and client communication, offering a high degree of autonomy, flexible scheduling, and the ability to work from home when not traveling. Responsibilities Plan and conduct surveillance inspections in accordance with established scheduling requirements and assigned territory needs. Prepare for inspections remotely by reviewing certification documents, planning site visits, and organizing required documentation and tools. Document manufacturers’ production and quality processes, including required production tests, test methods, equipment used, and calibration procedures for listed products, sub-assemblies, and components. Review label inventory and control processes to verify proper use and management of certification labels. Review non-compliances issued as a result of previous inspections, document unresolved issues, and follow up on corrective actions. Select samples for testing and review as directed by certification and inspection guidelines. Document all compliance and non-compliance findings during inspections in a clear, detailed, and accurate manner. Advise clients on proper resolution of non-compliance issues and provide guidance on meeting certification and quality requirements. Complete and submit Follow-up Service Inspection Reports for each client inspected within required timelines and standards. Communicate inspection findings, requirements, and follow-up actions between facility representatives and internal company personnel. Manage workload independently by creating and maintaining your own inspection schedule, including supporting approximately 60 clients twice a year. Maintain expenses within established guidelines and accurately track and report mileage and other reimbursable costs. Use your own vehicle for travel within the assigned territory, ensuring safe and efficient transportation to client sites. Utilize company-provided tools and tablet to conduct inspections, record data, and complete documentation and reports. Engage with clients professionally via email, phone, video conferencing, and in-person meetings to support ongoing inspection and certification activities. Essential Skills 5–10+ years of experience in product inspection and quality assurance. Experience in the manufacturing industry, with exposure to production processes and quality systems. Strong documentation and report-writing skills with attention to detail and accuracy. Excellent customer communication skills, including the ability to explain technical findings clearly to non-technical audiences. Proven ability to manage workload independently and plan weekly schedules without direct supervision. Proficiency with computers, tablets, and PDF documentation tools. Ability to effectively use Microsoft Teams, Zoom, and related collaboration software. Valid driver’s license and ability to travel throughout the assigned territory, including local and occasional longer-distance trips. Access to reliable internet and strong computer skills, including use of iPad, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams. Hands-on experience with quality assurance, quality inspection, and quality control activities. Experience with troubleshooting product issues during inspections. Knowledge of compliance auditing and product certification processes. Ability to perform technical inspections in manufacturing or construction environments. Familiarity with measurement tools such as micrometers and calipers. Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings. Understanding of quality systems management principles and practices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Associate’s Degree in Electronics or Systems Technologies is preferred. Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering Technology is a plus. Experience with electrical training or electrical product inspection is beneficial. Background in technical inspection within manufacturing, construction, or related industries. Ability to communicate effectively via email, over the phone, and in person with customers and internal stakeholders. Comfort using smart technology, including tablets, video conferencing tools, and digital documentation platforms. Strong sense of personal accountability and self-management to plan weekly schedules and meet deadlines. Familiarity with product certification bodies and testing laboratories such as ETL and UL is advantageous. Solid understanding of quality assurance methodologies and continuous improvement concepts. Work Environment This role is primarily remote with a mix of home-based work and on-site inspections. For this part-time assignment in Massachusetts, you will support approximately 60 clients, typically visiting each client twice a year, and you will create your own schedule while working out of your home when not traveling. In similar full-time roles, technicians are assigned around 30 clients per quarter and split their time roughly half on job sites and half working from home, with significant time spent at home preparing for visits and completing documentation. Most travel is local within about a 90-mile radius of your base location, though occasional overnight stays or longer drives may be required. You will use your own vehicle for all travel, with mileage reimbursed at a national rate and windshield time compensated. The company provides necessary tools and a tablet to perform inspections and complete reports. Standard working days are Monday through Friday, and full-time roles typically average 40 hours per week, while this position is approximately 20 hours per week. The work environment involves visiting manufacturing and construction-related facilities, interacting directly with client personnel, and using smart technology (tablet, video conferencing tools, and digital documentation) to conduct inspections and communicate findings. The culture emphasizes flexibility, autonomy, and professional support, with technicians trusted to manage their own schedules and work independently while being part of a well-established organization involved in many industries and product lines.
