Brooklyn Public Library (BPL) is one of the nation’s largest library systems and among New York City’s most democratic institutions. Brooklyn Public Library's Enhanced Young Adult Learning Program (EYALP) is designed especially for young adults ages 17 to 24 who seek to complete their High School Equivalency (HSE) and move forward into higher education, job training, and meaningful employment. The mission of EYALP is to partner with young adults to cultivate literacy and numeracy foundations, move toward high school equivalency, and contextualize learning in growth industries—ranging from healthcare to hospitality and computer technology—to propel EYALP achievers toward satisfying and successful careers. Position Summary The EYALP Program is seeking a part-time Achiever Advisor (Case Manager) to support young adults on their journey toward obtaining their HSE diploma and advancing into workforce development opportunities. The Achiever Advisor will build and maintain strong, trust-based relationships with program participants. They will employ a trauma-informed approach and demonstrate understanding of young adult mental health, providing guidance that is empathetic, culturally responsive, and supportive. This role requires comfort working in underserved communities in Brooklyn, where participants may face multiple social, economic, and educational barriers. Through individual and small-group advisement sessions and interviews, the Achiever Advisor will gain a well-rounded understanding of each participant’s strengths, interests, goals, educational and career readiness, and social support needs. The Achiever Advisor will maintain detailed case notes and develop individualized development plans addressing social, emotional, career, and educational goals. This role also ensures participants are knowledgeable about benefits, enrichment opportunities, and culturally competent community-based providers that can help remove barriers to success. The EYALP Achiever Advisor will work closely with all EYALP staff, including instructors, program associates, and coordinator, to ensure coordinated services, support achiever success and promote a meaningful impact in the lives of young adults. Responsibilities Conduct comprehensive literacy and educational/vocational assessments to develop and implement individualized service plans (approximately 50–60 clients annually) Maintain accurate case notes documenting goals, outcomes, and participant progress Coordinate and facilitate information sessions and workshops Collaborate with instructors and staff to identify and address barriers to educational and employment success Assist participants in accessing supportive services such as computer literacy, transportation, public assistance, and childcare In collaboration with the EYALP Coordinator, identify postsecondary transition programs that support out-of-school youth and adults earning HSE diplomas and/or improving English language skills Collaborate with community partners providing services such as health literacy, financial literacy, and workforce readiness Attend community partner meetings and bi-monthly case management team meetings Promote year-round enrichment opportunities available throughout NYC (free or low-cost) Proctor the Test of Adult Basic Education (TABE) and other assessments as needed Employ trauma-informed practices and demonstrate understanding of young adult mental health needs Maintain a culturally responsive, empathetic, and safe learning environment for participants Perform other duties necessary to achieve programmatic and service goals Qualifications Some college required; Bachelor’s degree in education, psychology, social services, or related field preferred Relevant experience in adult and young adult education strongly preferred (ABE & HSE) Experience counseling young adults and facilitating informational sessions Strong awareness of barriers facing young adult learners in underserved communities Knowledge of community-based education, training, and employment resources Familiarity with career development resources, labor market trends, and occupational requirements Trauma-informed practice and understanding of young adult mental health Initiative, resourcefulness, tact, courtesy, sound judgment, and strong problem-solving skills Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Suite, email, and social media platforms Experience with design, podcast/video tools, or related software a plus Ability to work a hybrid schedule with up to two days onsite and two days remote Program sites include the Brooklyn Public Library Learning Center and Community Centers (sites subject to change). Schedule & Compensation Program operates Monday–Friday, time varies from 10:00 AM–4:00 PM Part-time position (15–19 hours per week) Hybrid schedule (up to three days onsite and two days remote) Pay rate: $35 per hour Program sites subject to change This is a grant-funded position. Renewal is based on performance and funding availability through June 30, 2027.
