About SMB
SMB Money started out as an unsecured consumer lender built on a mix of technology and
manual processes. Over the past year, we have transformed into an agile, fully digital fintech
lender, powered by a market-leading, fully automated credit decisioning environment.
We are now scaling into mainstream personal loans, pairing the customer care and
responsible-lending discipline that built our reputation with a broader suite of longer-term
credit products designed for everyday New Zealanders.
It's a genuinely exciting time to join us!
We are building green-field risk infrastructure on the shoulders of a trusted brand, balancing
compliance and customer experience while steering SMB's next phase of high-growth
innovation.
About the Role
Numbers tell the story of every loan we write; from the moment someone applies to the day
their account closes in good standing (or doesn't). We are looking for a Risk Analytics & Insights
Lead to own that story end-to-end. You will turn origination, portfolio, and collections data into
the reporting, insight, and early-warning signals that drive how SMB lends, prices, and
manages risk.
This is a hands-on, high-visibility role sitting close to the Chief Risk, Data and Analytics Officer,
with your work feeding directly into credit strategy, pricing decisions and board-level reporting.
You will build and run the analytics engine behind our lending book, tracking how applications
convert, how accounts perform, how collections and delinquency trends move and how our
scorecards and models are holding up in the real world. You will work in a modern AWS-based
data stack, writing production-grade R and Python, and translating what the data shows into
recommendations the business can act on.
If you love finding the story hidden in a portfolio, the segment that is quietly drifting, the
vintage that's outperforming, the scorecard characteristic losing its edge, and you want that
story to change decisions, this role is built for you.
Key Responsibilities
- Own SMB's risk and credit reporting suite, covering originations, application
funnel/conversion, account performance, and collections/delinquency. Keep it accurate, timely,
and genuinely useful to decision-makers.
- Design and automate dashboards and reporting pipelines in R/Python on AWS, replacing
manual spreadsheet work with reliable, repeatable analytics.
- Track and interpret portfolio health metrics such as vintage curves, roll rates, arrears buckets,
and cure and recovery rates, and flag emerging risk before it shows up in the loss numbers.
- Monitor application and behavioural scorecard and model performance (PSI, KS, gains/lift,
characteristic and override analysis), working closely with the credit risk modelling team to
keep scorecards sharp and fit for purpose.
- Turn origination, pricing, and channel data (including broker channels) into insight that
informs underwriting policy, risk-based pricing, and growth strategy.
- Partner with Collections and Underwriting to surface early-warning indicators and support
data-led decisions on treatment strategies and hardship response.
- Build the analytics and reporting backbone for regulatory and compliance obligations,
including CCCFA-related reporting and responsible lending metrics.
- Present findings and recommendations clearly to non-technical stakeholders, from Ops
teams through to the Chief Risk, Data and Analytics Officer and executive leadership.
- Own data quality for risk reporting. Chase down anomalies at the source rather than patching
them downstream.
- Help lift quantitative and reporting capability across the wider Risk and Ops team through
informal coaching and well-documented, self-serve reporting tools.
Skills and Experience
Essential:
- Strong hands-on skills in R and/or Python for data analysis, automation, and reporting.
Comfortable writing production-quality code, not just ad hoc scripts.
- Experience building analytics and reporting on a cloud data stack, ideally AWS (e.g. Redshift,
S3, Athena, QuickSight, Glue) or an equivalent modern stack.
- Strong SQL skills and comfort working with large, imperfect, real-world lending data.
- Experience monitoring scorecards or predictive models in production (population stability,
characteristic drift, performance tracking). You don't need to build models from scratch, but
you understand how they're meant to behave and can spot when they're not.
- Track record building clear, decision-ready dashboards and reports (e.g. QuickSight, Power BI,
Tableau, or similar) for both technical and business audiences.
- Excellent communication skills, able to translate analytical findings into plain-English insight
for underwriting, collections, and leadership stakeholders.
- A self-starting, detail-oriented approach. Comfortable owning a reporting domain end-to-end
with minimal hand-holding.
Desirable:
- Experience in consumer or SME lending, fintech, or another regulated financial services
environment in New Zealand or Australia.
- Solid grounding in consumer credit risk concepts, including originations and application
funnels, account/portfolio performance, delinquency and collections, and vintage and roll-rate
analysis.
- Familiarity with loan management/decisioning platforms such as Mambu, or credit bureau
data (Equifax, Centrix, Experian / Illion).
- Exposure to affordability/serviceability methodologies, IFRS 9 provisioning, or behavioural
scoring frameworks.
- Experience reporting on broker or intermediary origination channels.
- Exposure to CCCFA or other responsible lending regulatory reporting requirements.
What We Offer
- A high-visibility role with direct line of sight to the Chief Risk, Data and Analytics Officer and
real influence over credit strategy.
- The chance to build modern, automated risk analytics from the ground up on a green-field
AWS stack, rather than inherit someone else's legacy reporting.
- Flexible, hybrid or remote working arrangements across New Zealand and Australia.
- High ownership and autonomy, in a lean team where your work is seen and used.
- A collaborative, no-ego culture at a scaling fintech with a 13-year track record of responsible
lending.
- Competitive salary and a performance-based incentive structure.
