About the Company

We're a boutique financial advisory firm specializing in strategic advice, interim management, and managed accounting support for Canadian companies of all sizes and stages. Our mission: to help clients not just survive, but thrive and grow.

We offer services across four key areas: Restructuring (navigating financial challenges), Accounting & Finance (full-cycle financial management), Business Financing (strategic funding guidance), and Mortgage Administration (back-office processing). We're small enough for personalized attention but established enough to deliver sophisticated expertise and real stability.

Our clients span the business lifecycle - from startups needing foundational support, to growth-stage companies optimizing operations, to established businesses refining strategies, to companies facing financial turnaround needs. We serve diverse industries across Canada. We've worked with well-known Canadian brands like Second Cup Coffee and Danier.

OUR COMPANY VALUES guide our team and shape our culture:

  • 🎯 Planning and Execution: We turn plans into action and manage every step to success
  • πŸ” Attention to Detail: We verify every detail to ensure accuracy
  • ✨ Results Over Words: We deliver results and let our work speak for us

We're a remote-first organization with 23 teammates across both departments, including full-time, part-time consultants, and various arrangements: onshore in Toronto (hybrid - 3 days/week in office) and Montreal, and offshore in Pakistan.

Our culture is supportive, fast-paced, and growth-oriented. We're client-centered - for many clients, we are their accounting department. We invest in growing both team members and clients. Senior Managers support your professional development. As a niche company, you'll work directly with leadership and have real impact.

About the Role

We're looking for a remote Senior Accountant to take ownership of full-cycle accounting for Canadian clients and serve as their trusted accounting partner.

You'll manage multiple client accounts with significant autonomy while working alongside an onshore Manager. For many clients, we are their complete accounting department - your work directly impacts their business decisions and growth. You'll start with smaller clients and progress to larger, more complex accounts as you grow toward a Manager role.

This isn't just bookkeeping - we need critical thinkers who question processes, identify efficiencies, and take ownership. Every client is different, so you'll need good judgment and the ability to adapt while maintaining high standards.

Our IDEAL CANDIDATE brings 4-6+ years of full-cycle accounting experience from a major accounting firm or multinational company. You're technically strong, but more importantly: you think independently, question what doesn't make sense, and use practical judgment to bring solutions that make Managers' lives easier. You don't need hand-holding - when blockers arise, you figure it out and get it done. You'll enable Managers to focus on strategy while you deliver accurate work, help us scale, and grow alongside the company and clients.

Your performance will be measured by accuracy (minimal revisions), timeliness (meeting deadlines), and client satisfaction.

You'll collaborate closely with Managers and other Accountants within the Managed Accounting Department. This position reports directly to the Senior Manager.

You’ll be doing things like:

  • Monthly Accounting & Close: Managing 3-4 client accounts with Manager oversight; daily bookkeeping; posting general journal entries; managing AP, AR, bank reconciliations, and credit card reconciliations; coordinating payroll entries; applying accrual accounting (booking uninvoiced expenses, reversing next period); closing months accurately and on time, even when documentation is pending.
  • Financial Reporting: Preparing monthly financial statements with your Manager; creating AR aging and collections reports; preparing financial packages and supporting schedules; working with Managers to finalize deliverables.
  • Client Service & Communication: Responding promptly to client inquiries; participating in phone and video calls; analyzing transactions and researching issues; providing documentation; building trusted relationships (for many clients, we ARE their accounting department).
  • Year-End Support: Preparing year-end packages for external accountants and auditors; gathering documentation and supporting schedules; uploading bank statements to portals; assisting with year-end and quarterly reconciliations; coordinating with external parties to support audits and tax filings.
  • Team Collaboration & Mentorship: Peer reviewing other Accountants' work and catching errors before they reach clients; mentoring junior team members; building backup knowledge of files for coverage during absences; coordinating on shared clients; communicating file status and blockers; supporting colleagues during busy periods.
  • Process Improvement: Identifying inefficiencies and suggesting improvements; automating repetitive tasks; documenting SOPs; exploring AI and automation tools; questioning existing processes and bringing fresh ideas.

Skills & Qualifications

  • 4-6+ years experience as Senior Accountant, Senior Bookkeeper, or Full-Cycle Accountant at accounting firms or corporate accounting departments, with demonstrated expertise in bank reconciliations.
  • ACCA, CA, or equivalent professional accounting qualification (required)
  • Full-cycle accounting expertise including bookkeeping, financial statement preparation, month-end close, AP/AR management, reconciliations, and journal entries
  • Strong understanding of financial statements, revenue/expense recognition, and accrual accounting
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks (Online and Desktop), Sage, and Xero
  • Advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, formulas, financial modeling)
  • Ownership mentality - taking full responsibility for deliverables and meeting deadlines regardless of obstacles
  • Critical thinking and proactive communication - questioning existing processes and speaking up when something doesn't seem right
  • Self-sufficiency and problem-solving - researching answers, unblocking yourself, and bringing solutions not problems
  • Strong communication skills for client interactions
  • Attention to detail, commitment to accuracy, and reliability meeting deadlines
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with remote teammates

Bonus if you also have:

  • Experience reviewing work or mentoring junior Accountants
  • Prior experience at multinational companies or major accounting firms serving multiple clients
  • Familiarity with Canadian tax system, holidays, and business culture (HST/GST, statutory holidays)
  • Exposure to process improvement, SOP documentation, or automation/AI tools
  • Familiarity with our tools: QuickBooks Online, QuickBooks Desktop, Xero, Sage, Excel, Microsoft 365, Slack, Teams, Gmail, Outlook, Google Meet, Asana, Harvest, Google Drive, ADP, Ceridian, Bullhorn, Expensify, Rydoo, Wise
