Title: Senior Accounting Manager - Inventory Accounting Reports To: Director of Accounting Location: Remote (In person meetings as needed) Role overview: The Senior Accounting Manager is responsible for delivering value and accounting services to clients from Propeller's portfolio of fast-growing consumer brand, e-commerce, technology, and food & beverage companies, with a particular focus on inventory accounting. This includes managing teams of accountants, providing weekly, monthly and year-end accounting activities, and identifying, implementing, and training clients on best-in-class inventory accounting strategies and systems. The role offers growth and exposure across several industries & systems, as well as the opportunity to lead and scale a team. The Senior Accounting Manager works closely with our Accounting and Finance Directors, as well as others at Propeller, to manage client relationships, oversee the preparation of our clients' monthly financial reports — including inventory valuation and reconciliation — and develop and implement best practices and accounting processes for our clients. The ideal candidate possesses management and/or leadership experience, solid operational and technical accounting skills (with particular strength in cost and inventory accounting), strong communication skills, and a proven ability to juggle priorities and anticipate client needs. This person is a self-starter, adaptable and proactive; has a high level of integrity; is action and goal-oriented; understands when & how to delegate tasks; and is comfortable in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment. It's a plus to have prior warehouse, production, or similar hands-on inventory experience, as well as experience in a client-services, multi-client, or multi-entity environment. Key Responsibilities Management & Collaboration • Manage 1-3 team members, assisting in the development and growth of their careers. • Participate in the interviewing, hiring and onboarding of new team members. • Mentor and develop a team of Propeller accountants by reviewing their work, providing constructive feedback and ensuring adequate opportunities for training and new experiences. • Allocate and delegate work across teams to balance workload and training opportunities. • Partner with colleagues across the company and within the team to implement and integrate new processes. Accounting & Reporting • Oversee teams delivering standard weekly and monthly accounting and bookkeeping. • Lead month-end close process for a portfolio of clients, working with a team of accountants to complete reconciliations and prepare supporting schedules as needed. • Prepare monthly consolidated financial statements, highlighting industry specific KPIs. • Develop reporting; providing value-added analysis and metrics which provide insight into the client's financials. • Own general accounting processes, including proactively streamlining workflow, reviewing account reconciliations, troubleshooting team issues and ensuring accuracy of deliverables. • Develop, document and maintain scalable standard operating procedures with strong controls. • Lead the development and teaching of complex accounting processes with clients and internal teams to ensure efficiency, accuracy, and timely delivery of financials. • Train client teams on best practices as needed. • Track and assist in state and local tax filings. Inventory Accounting • Identify the best strategies and systems to manage inventory to meet client needs and GAAP requirements, including proper valuation and classification. • Guide the selection and implementation of inventory management systems (IMS) to facilitate efficient and accurate accounting. • Establish procedures to reconcile monthly inventory activity using various IMS and accounting software and methods across a diverse portfolio of CPG clients. • Train client staff and Propeller staff on proper procedures for managing inventory activities, including end-of-month reconciliations. • Identify inefficiencies in inventory accounting and opportunities to improve inventory management to reduce costs and variances. • Resolve inventory discrepancies and address inventory-related challenges promptly, proposing practical solutions. Client Services • Deliver high quality client service to a portfolio of clients in multiple industries. • Develop an understanding of client teams and clients' business models. • Anticipate clients' needs, set expectations, and provide strategic support. • Partner with Propeller Directors to manage client relationships throughout their lifecycle with Propeller. • Confidently articulate the value proposition to clients. • Act as the primary point of contact for clients' accounting and inventory questions and needs. • Build strong relationships with internal and external customers, providing insight and training to best manage client inventory accounting. Skills, Knowledge and Expertise Qualifications: • 7 years operational accounting experience. • Experience directly building, managing and developing a team. • Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of stakeholders. • An undergraduate degree in Accounting or Finance. • Knowledge of consulting business model and tools in multi-client environment. • A passion for leveraging systems and driving process improvements. • Experience with full close-cycle accounting. • Experience in QBO. • Experience in Netsuite, Shopify, Bill.com and other related software tools a plus. • Strong knowledge of cost accounting, with demonstrated experience or a desire to become a subject matter expert in inventory accounting. • Thorough understanding of inventory and supply chain processes. • Familiarity with inventory management systems (IMS), especially Cin7, Dear, QBE, Netsuite, and Fishbowl. • Strong working knowledge of Excel. • CPA and/or Big-4 experience a plus. • Expertise working in e-commerce start-up or consumer packaged goods a plus. • Knowledge of industry specific KPIs a plus.
