Senior Engineering Manager, Commerce Platform

About the Commerce Platform: The Commerce Platform team is the trusted commerce backbone of Rover, owning everything from the orders lifecycle to the checkout and payout experience — making it effortless, secure, and reliable for anyone to transact on Rover while ensuring financial accuracy, auditability, and regulatory compliance at scale. Our team's responsibilities include: Owning the end-to-end transaction lifecycle. We maintain orders and line-item data, fees, credits and promotions, and booking modifications and cancellations, and we serve as the source of truth for what gets charged, credited, taxed, and paid out on the platform — including tax calculation and reporting across eligible jurisdictions. Delivering a convenient, secure checkout and payout experience. We own the integrations with our payment service providers (including Stripe and PayPal), manage KYC verification, ensure PCI compliance, and continually improve the platform by expanding payment offerings, optimizing checkout flows, and reducing bottom-line expenses through high-impact projects. Ensuring accurate, audit-ready financial records. We run the reconciliation and reporting pipelines that keep month close accurate, partnering closely with Rover's Finance & Accounting and FP&A teams as Rover grows internationally and adds new service lines. This is a hybrid position that has the minimum expectation to work out of our Downtown Seattle Office two days per week on Mondays and Thursdays. Your Qualifications: Deep technical background with 10+ years in software development best practices, system design, and architecture, and the range to stay credible across the languages and technologies the team uses 8+ years managing multiple teams of engineers, including through one or more managers, with a track record of leading high-complexity, cross-functional initiatives with significant business impact and influencing technical strategy beyond an immediate team Experience leveraging AI and agentic coding tools to increase engineering velocity and raise the technical bar across engineering teams Experience with large-scale, high-traffic consumer marketplace platforms; commerce, payments, or other finance-critical domain experience preferred A track record of growing engineering managers and individual engineers, and building diverse, high-functioning teams with high psychological safety Strong written and verbal communication, including with senior leadership and stakeholders Aligned with Rover Core Values We're looking for engineering leaders who: Set technical vision and strategy across their domain — partnering with product and engineering leadership on roadmap, using data to drive KPIs, resourcing, and investment decisions — while staying hands-on enough to preserve technical credibility Develop a deep enough understanding of Rover's company-wide strategy and roadmap to proactively identify opportunities for the commerce platform, and build the cross-functional partnerships across the company needed to act on them Understand why commerce demands near-zero fault tolerance, and hold their teams accountable to the accuracy, precision, and observability standards that protect it — investing in the practices and technology that let that rigor scale as the domain grows Drive AI-native transformation across the domain — identifying where AI/ML and automation can meaningfully improve accuracy, velocity, or cost within commerce platform workflows, and leading their teams through that adoption Coach and grow engineering managers and engineers, including setting goals, delivering reviews, and hiring great people across their teams and the broader org Communicate strategy, status, and risk clearly to senior stakeholders, and coordinate cross-team and cross-functional dependencies so commitments stay realistic Bring a distinct background and point of view that sharpens decision-making and broadens thinking across the wider engineering org, not just their own teams Exemplify Rover's Core Values, particularly Discipline in the Way We Debate and Intentional Balance of Pace and Precision , given the stakes of getting this domain right Benefits of Working at Rover: Competitive compensation 401k match Long-term incentive plan with a company performance-based cash payout Flexible PTO Competitive benefits package, including medical, dental, and vision insurance Commuter benefits Bring your dog to work (and unlimited puppy time) Pet benefits, including $1000 toward adopting your first dog or cat Stocked fridges, coffee, soda, and lots of treats (for humans and dogs) and free catered lunches monthly Regular team activities performed in-person and virtually Compensation: In the Greater Seattle Area the first-year salary range is $198,696-$264,266. Additionally, Rover offers a long-term incentive plan with a company performance-based cash payout and benefits to full-time employees. The cash compensation offered for this role will be dependent on the candidate's experience, qualifications, skills, and abilities as demonstrated in the interview and hiring process.
