Join us! Role Responsibilities Build the applications that turn spatial data into real-world decisions, end to end and hands-on, with AI as your co-developer. We're looking for an experienced senior full stack developer - Geospatial Services who can design a solution, build it, and deliver it to a reliable, sustainable product while leading and mentoring others. AI is core to how we build. Our applications are geospatial, so you'll build with GIS technologies alongside a modern full stack. The Business Technology Operations branch within the Ministry of Technology & Innovation plans for, implements, operates, and supports the digital services foundation technologies and platforms hosting the digital systems and data that empower business partners' services across the Government of Alberta (GOA). The branch ensures that modern technologies, including both on-premises and cloud-based hosting environments, along with an operating framework are in place to support the GoA's digital and data strategies. The branch is also responsible for the implementation, operation, and support of corporate electronic content management services as well as legacy business applications in accordance with policies and standards. Reporting within the geospatial services team, this position designs and implements modern, AI-enabled software solutions and leads their delivery end to end. Working in an iterative, continuous-delivery environment where requirements and solutions evolve through close collaboration with cross-functional teams and users, you will combine solution design, hands-on full stack development, and technical leadership to deliver applications that leverage GIS technologies and are built to be maintainable, secure, and sustainable. This is a hands-on role that combines solution design with active development and delivery; design decisions are made and proven through implementation, and the focus is on designing, building, and delivering applications end to end. Minimum of 4 years of experience in: Proven experience as a full stack developer designing, developing, deploying, and maintaining scalable web-based applications end to end within cross-functional Agile teams, delivering complete product and project outcomes. Strong proficiency in modern full stack development, including JavaScript/TypeScript and front-end frameworks (React or similar); back-end development (C#/.NET, Node.js, Python or equivalent); relational and NoSQL databases; cloud platforms; and modern authentication/authorization (OAuth2, OpenID Connect, JWT or equivalent) Experience with modern software engineering practices and the full delivery lifecycle: Git-based source control, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing (unit, integration, end-to-end), DevOps principles, production support, and structured application lifecycle and change management. Demonstrated ability to lead technical delivery hands-on, owning solution design, making architecture decisions through implementation, mentoring developers, and driving products to a reliable, sustainable production state (a hands-on technical lead, not a design-only or oversight-only role). Practical experience using generative AI and agentic development tools to accelerate and improve software delivery, with the judgment to critically evaluate AI-generated output for accuracy, risk, and sensitivity before use. Demonstrated experience designing and building applications that consume and integrate GIS services (map, feature, image, and geoprocessing services or similar) using Esri ArcGIS and/or open-source GIS technologies. Working knowledge of core spatial concepts, including coordinate reference systems, spatial data, and web services, required to build GIS-enabled applications competently. Demonstrated ability to work across diverse technology stacks and rapidly adapt to new tools, frameworks, and project environments while maintaining high-quality delivery standards. Equivalencies : A related two-year diploma in computer technology or a related discipline from a recognized post-secondary institution and six (6) years related experience; or A related one-year certificate from a recognized post-secondary institution and seven (7) years related experience. Qualifications continued Assets: Experience with the Esri application stack, such as ArcGIS Experience Builder, ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript, and the ArcGIS API for Python. Experience with spatial ETL and integration tooling (FME or equivalent) and event-driven, API-gateway, and OpenAPI-based integration patterns Advanced experience with enterprise geodatabase design and spatial indexing, including coordinate reference system management at scale. Experience with spatial database administration and performance tuning (SQL Server, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, or equivalent) Experience developing mobile or field spatial solutions (e.g., field data collection, asset inspection, or location-aware workflows) Experience with API and event-driven integration patterns (e.g., GraphQL, gRPC, WebSockets, message-driven architectures), and SRE-style practices such as infrastructure-as-code, observability, monitoring, and incident response.
