Our Environmental Compliance and Ground Engineering team within Tetra Tech Consulting is looking for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join us in either Abingdon or London. This is an exciting opportunity for someone ready to take the next step in their career and progress to Senior grade within a collaborative, multi-disciplinary consultancy environment. Purpose & Scope of the Role You will deliver geotechnical design and interpretative reporting across a varied portfolio of projects throughout the UK. No two projects are the same, with work ranging in scale and complexity, offering the opportunity to broaden your technical experience and make a real contribution to project success. Working closely with colleagues and clients, you will provide interpretative advice, design support and technical guidance across all stages of delivery. This will include supporting due diligence, planning applications, preparation of site investigation specifications, management of site investigation and scheduling of laboratory testing, interpretive reporting geotechnical design, preparation of geotechnical construction works specifications, and construction-stage monitoring and validation. Whilst the primary role relates to the design and specification of geotechnical works, including earthworks, foundations and slope stability, you will also provide project management and the delivery of your own projects in a relatively short period of time. You will also support junior colleagues and help strengthen the capability of the wider team. Your Impact in This Position In this role, you will help deliver practical, robust and commercially sound geotechnical solutions that support clients across a diverse range of projects. You will make an impact by: delivering high-quality geotechnical design and interpretative reporting; supporting projects from early investigation through to construction; helping shape safe, effective and buildable engineering solutions; contributing to project delivery, coordination and technical quality; supporting the development of junior staff and graduates; helping to drive business growth through trusted technical expertise. Core Capabilities Technical Experience Strong practical understanding of UK geology and geotechnical / soil mechanics principles, with experience in site investigation techniques, soil and rock logging, factual and interpretive reporting, laboratory scheduling, geotechnical assessment, analysis, modelling, risk assessment and design. Geotechnical Reporting and Analysis UK experience producing geotechnical interpretive and design reports, including Phase 1 Desk Studies, Phase 2 Ground Investigation Reports, Geotechnical Design Reports and geotechnical works construction specifications. Project Delivery, Leadership and Mentoring Ability to support junior staff and graduates through review, guidance and knowledge sharing, while contributing to project management in a consultancy environment and working to programme, budget and quality expectations. Integrated Design and Problem Solving Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines to develop practical geotechnical solutions that balance technical, commercial and buildability considerations. Communication and Collaboration A confident and collaborative approach, with the ability to build trust with colleagues and clients, communicate clearly and work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team. Qualifications & Experience Expected Relevant Master’s degree, or Bachelor’s degree as a minimum, in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Geology, Civil Engineering or a related discipline. Full UK driving licence, as short-term site visits are a key part of the role. Working knowledge of AutoCAD or GIS would be advantageous. Ideally close to, or already achieved, Chartered membership of the relevant professional body. Working experience and understanding of EC7 geotechnical design, including earthworks, foundations, settlement and slope stability analysis. Beneficial Experience of geoenvironmental / contaminated land investigation and assessment. Experience supervising and monitoring earthworks or geotechnical projects for infrastructure or land development. Experience of Construction Quality Assurance monitoring and validation reporting in the waste or land development sector. Equivalent work experience may also be considered where appropriate. Working Environment It will be worked on a hybrid basis, with regular office attendance expected to support collaboration, client engagement and team development. The role includes a mix of office-based work, site visits, project coordination and client interaction, with flexibility available depending on project needs and business priorities. Remote and flexible working arrangements can be considered within a balanced hybrid structure. Occasional travel to project locations, client meetings and site-related discussions across the UK will also b e required. #LI-LD1 #LI-HYBRID
